The trailer has arrived for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Netflix's CG animated reboot of the Mattel cartoon popular in the 1980s.

The trailer sees Prince Adam transform into He-Man for the very first time, leaving his friends with a whole lot of questions. Before even Adam has time to fully understand his new power, though, he's introduced to Skeletor. Thankfully, He-Man isn't the only Master of the Universe.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is the second of two series based on the He-Man property in the works from Netflix. The first, announced in August 2020, is the anime series Masters of the Universe: Revelation, helmed by Kevin Smith and animated by Powerhouse Animation. While Revelation serves as a sequel series to the original cartoon, the new He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is a reboot, featuring familiar characters and themes with new designs. Another contrast is the animation styles of the two series, as Revelation is traditional where He-Man is 3D.

The series will be produced by Mattel Television, with Adam Bonnett, Christopher Keenan, and Revelation's Rob David serving as executive producers, with David as showrunner. The new trailer is the first footage from the project to be revealed, although Mattel's new line of action figures based on the show offered an idea of what the characters of He-Man, Skeletor, Evil Lyn and Battle Cat would look like.

Fred Soulie, Mattel's Senior VP of Content Distribution and Business Development, previously issued a statement saying, "Masters of the Universe is one of the most iconic global franchises of all time, with a 30-year history and a passionate fan base. The entire team at Mattel is excited to introduce the world of He-Man to a new generation and, together with the talented team at Netflix, to reimagine the classic characters in a way that appeals to kids and families today, while also resonating with the fans who grew up with them.”

The official description of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe evokes the old-school charm of the original series:

On the planet of Eternia, a young lost prince discovers the powers of Grayskull and transforms into He-Man, Master of the Universe! The classic battle between He-Man and evil Skeletor rages to new heights as both hero and villain forge new and mighty teams. A new generation of heroes fighting for the fate of us all. In the end, who will become MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE?

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe arrives on Netflix Sept. 16.
