HBO's Game Of Thrones Plants Its Flag On Emmy Nominations

HBO's fantasy adaptation Game of Thrones will battle the likes of Boardwalk Empire, Dexter and Mad Men for outstanding drama in the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards.

The nominations, announced this morning in Burbank, Calif., were led by HBO's Mildred Pierce with 21, followed by AMC's Mad Men with 19 and HBO's Boardwalk Empire with 18. However, Game of Thrones was undoubtedly one of the biggest surprises, tying with NBC's 30 Rock with 13 nominations, including nods for outstanding drama, outstanding supporting actor (Peter Dinklage), outstanding directing (Tim Van Patten for "Winter is Coming") and outstanding writing (David Beniof and D.B. Weiss for "Baelor").

AMC's The Walking Dead, an adaptation of the long-running comic series by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard, received three nominations in technical categories: special visual effects, sound editing and prosthetic makeup, all for the episode "Days Gone Bye."
