HBO has snagged Swamplandia!, a half-hour comedy from The Social Network producer Scott Rudin. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the search is already under way for a writer.
Based on Karen Russell's quirky debut novel, released early this year, Swamplandia! follows Ava Bigtree, a 12-year-old alligator wrestler who sets off on a journey through the mangrove wilderness of southwest Florida in search of her lost sister, who's run off with a spooky character who may be a ghost.
Rudin will serve as executive producer, with the author consulting. Russell, whose work has appeared in The Best American Short Stories, The New Yorker and Oxford American, previously released a short-story collection called St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves.
