James Wolk, who played Bob Benson on Mad Men, has been cast in a major recurring role on HBO's Watchmen.

According to Deadline, Wolk may be playing a U.S. senator who will no doubt run afoul of the main cast. Developed by Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers), the upcoming HBO series is inspired by the seminal DC comic by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, but isn't a direct adaptation. “Those issues are sacred ground and they will not be retread nor recreated nor reproduced nor rebooted,” Lindelof explained earlier this year. “They will however be remixed.”

Like the influential 1986-1987 comic, Watchmen is set in an alternate history in which "superheroes" are treated as outlaws. Zack Snyder directed a 2009 film adaptation that was relatively faithful to the source material but, nevertheless, met with a polarizing reaction from critics and audiences alike.

Developed by Damon Lindelof, HBO's Watchmen stars Jeremy Irons, Regina King, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Tom Mison, James Wolk, Adelaide Clemens, Andrew Howard, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, Lily Rose Smith, and Adelynn Spoon. The series is expected to premiere on HBO sometime in 2019.
