Next month, HBO's eagerly anticipated adaptation of Watchmen will continue the dystopian, superhero world created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. To celebrate, the network is inviting fans to create their own masks inspired by the upcoming television series.
In partnership with Spark AR, the Watchmen x Spark AR Mask Off Contest has fans design AR masks based on the world where police, criminals and vigilantes alike wear masks to conceal their identities and represent their true personalities. Three winners will receive $10,000 each and have their work featured on the series' official Instagram page.
Masks -- submitted by October 6 through the Spark AR Studio, based on details and assets in the Watchmen theme toolkit -- are eligible for the prize. Masks will be judged based on creativity, theme and functionality, with submissions ranging from five to 20 seconds to demonstrate the AR effects on the mask.
HBO's adaptation of Watchmen takes place decades after the events of the landmark comic book story of the same name. Police and their families are systematically targeted by criminals, forcing them to wear masks and conceal their identities. This results in a violent world where vigilantes and criminals run rampant.
Developed by Damon Lindelof, HBO's Watchmen stars Jeremy Irons, Regina King, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Tom Mison, James Wolk, Adelaide Clemens, Andrew Howard, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, Lily Rose Smith and Adelynn Spoon. The series will premiere Oct. 20.
