HBO's Adaptation of Stephen King's The Outsider Gets First Trailer

HBO has released the first trailer for the TV adaptation of Stephen King's bestselling novel The Outsider.

The ominous trailer for the 10-episode series showcases Rogue One: A Star Wars Story's Ben Mendelsohn as Detective Ralph Anderson as he leads the investigation into the gruesome murder of an 11 year-old boy. He arrests Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman) for the crime but in True Detective-fashion, not all is what it appears to be.

Conflicting footage places the suspect somewhere else, leaving Anderson wondering if otherworldly forces are trying to frame Maitland. The clip also introduces private eye Holly Gibney (Cynthia Erivo), who's brought in to help solve unexplainable aspects of the case, with Anderson's personal life being affected by apparent supernatural forces too.

The Outsider's first two episodes will be directed by Bateman, who also serves as executive producer, in a similar setup to his role on Netflix's Ozark. Frequent HBO collaborator Richard Price (The Wire, The Night Of) serves as writer and executive producer, along with Andrew Bernstein, Marty Bowen, Jack Bender, Michael Costigan and Dennis Lehane.

The Outsider premieres January 12, 2020.
