The premiere episode of HBO's highly-anticipated adaptation of The Last of Us has a running time comparable to that of a feature film.According to an official HBO listing (shared to Twitter by YouTuber DomTheBomb), The Last of Us' first episode clocks in at a whopping one hour and 25 minutes (i.e. 85 minutes). While most films run at a minimum of 90 minutes, the Last of Us premiere's advertised runtime is actually longer than that of certain theatrically-released features, such as The Nightmare Before Christmas and Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, both of which clock in at 76 minutes. Moreover, The Last of Us fans can expect the premiere episode's 85-minute runtime to consist mostly of actual content, seeing as how HBO is a premium channel that does not run commercials with its shows.RELATED: Why Sam Raimi's Last of Us Movie Adaptation Fell Through

Based on the PlayStation-exclusive post-apocalyptic video game of the same name, HBO's The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian) and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones) as main protagonists Joel and Ellie, respectively. Neil Druckmann, the creative director of the original game, serves as co-creator of the HBO series alongside Craig Mazin (Chernobyl). The live-action adaptation is slated to premiere on HBO on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2023. Its first season will run for a total of nine episodes.

"The series takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed," an official, video game-accurate synopsis for HBO's The Last of Us reads. "Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival."

The Last of Us Is a Modern PlayStation Classic

Developed by Naughty Dog (Crash Bandicoot, Uncharted) and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, The Last of Us originally released exclusively for the PlayStation 3 in June 2013 to widespread critical and commercial success. The PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013, with a remastered version of The Last of Us being brought over to the then-new console in 2014.

A sequel, The Last of Us Part II, released for the PS4 in June 2020, with Druckmann returning as creative director. The Last of Us Part II enjoyed similar success as its predecessor, currently holding the record for the most Game of the Year awards. Most recently, The Last of Us Part I, a remake of the first game, released for the PlayStation 5 this past September. A PC version of the remake is due for release in March 2023. Rumors suggest that a third main installment in the Last of Us series is currently in the works.
