HBO's first full-on image of Joel and Ellie from the network's The Last of Us adaptation is here.

In the image shared on social media, Pedro Pascal's Joel and Bella Ramsey's Ellie are seen lying low in what appears to be a location taken straight from the game: the museum that sits on the outskirts of Boston, Massachusetts. One of the game's infamous infected humans looms in the distance behind the two beloved protagonists. Pascal posted the first image of Ellie and Joel in September 2021, but the two were only seen from behind, staring across a field at the wreckage of a crashed airplane.

In the third chapter of the 2013 survival horror game, a wave of vicious infected humans drive Joel, Ellie and fellow survivor Tess into an abandoned museum. Inside, a number of tense sequences play out as Joel is separated from Tess and Ellie and must make his way through the eerie building to reunite with them. As he arrives, another flood of infected attacks the group, and the player must hack and slash their way out of the room. It appears HBO may borrow significantly from this chapter for its upcoming adaptation.

Pascal recently compared his experience working on The Mandalorian to the Last of Us series, praising the show's creators for their dedication. "It's similar to the way Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni treat The Mandalorian, in how [Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann] are treating The Last of Us -- it's in good hands because they love it so much," he said. "There's a very, very creative way of honoring what's important and also preserving what is iconic to the experience of the video game, and also [to include] things that you wouldn't necessarily expect."

All compliments aside, Pascal also revealed he gave up on playing the original game in its entirety. "It's so sad, I haven't any skill," he said. "I tried, you know. And then it was only a matter of minutes before I had to hand it over to my nephew. It really takes a specific kind of skill, and I don't have it." He did, however, call the game "such a visually impressive experience" and praised Joel's character as "so impressive."

HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us is set to air on HBO and stream on HBO Max in 2023. Filmed largely in Calgary, Alberta, production on the series is scheduled to wrap up on June 10, 2022.
