Chernobyl's Johan Renck will direct the pilot episode of HBO's The Last of Us series.

Renck made the announcement in an interview with Discussing Film. The door is open for him to direct other episodes in the series, but those discussions are still ongoing. Renck will also serve as an executive producer for the series. The video game's creator Neil Druckmann is also attached as a writer and executive producer.

The Last of Us will reunite Renck with Chernobyl creator and writer Craig Mazin, who is leading the charge on the video game adaptation. Renck directed all five episodes of the HBO limited series, winning an Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special.

Released in 2013, The Last of Us is a survival horror game set in an apocalyptic near future. After a disease turns most of humanity into zombie-like creatures, Joel, one of the few survivors, must protect a young girl named Ellie, who is immune to the mutation and may be able to provide a cure. It is one of the best-selling video games of all time, selling over 1.3 million copies in its first week. A sequel, The Last of Us Part II, is set to release on June 19.
