HBO has released a new trailer for Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street, its upcoming documentary chronicling the origins of Sesame Street

The trailer runs over two minutes long and covers a lot of ground with respect to the creation of the groundbreaking children's program that started in 1969. Many of the creatives and executives responsible for the show are featured, along with original cast members and, of course, many of the beloved Muppets such as Kermit the Frog and Oscar the Grouch. According to the trailer, Street Gang will hit HBO Max on Dec. 13.

The trailer begins with several behind-the-scenes shots of the crew on set and the Muppets in their places before the cameras. "What do you think makes Sesame Street so appealing to kids?" Oscar the Grouch asks from his trashcan home. "I hate it myself." Both archival footage and current interviews are used to examine why the program was created, which was to educate children through the medium of television. The iconic street setting, the enthusiastic reception it received, the diversity of the human cast members and the harmony with which everyone lived together (including the Muppet monsters) are all seen in rapid succession.

It also touches on some of the issues with racial representation the show encountered, with certain neighborhoods boycotting broadcasts of the show. And there is celebration of some of the special guests such as B.B. King and Stevie Wonder, who helped to broaden the horizons of young viewers. When the well-known theme song kicks in, Jim Henson and Frank Oz are celebrated, with shot upon iconic shot of many of the show's finest moments. A young girl giving Kermit a hug and kiss helps bring the trailer to a warm-hearted close.

Originally released in theatres in April of this year and then made available via video on demand in May, this release date marks the first time the documentary will be widely available to HBO Max subscribers. Drawing inspiration from the 2008 book titled Street Gang by Michael Davis that told the story of Sesame Street's creation for its 40th anniversary, the documentary has garnered critical acclaim for its insightful look into the beginnings of one of the television's most adored and influential shows.

Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street premieres on HBO Max on Dec. 14.
