HBO Max has renewed Our Flag Means Death for a second season.
Per the network, David Jenkins' historical comedy will see the adventures of Stede Bonnet and Edward "Blackbeard" Teach continue. "We felt the show was special while we were making it," Jenkins said in a statement, "But fans' open-armed embrace of the inhabitants of the Revenge makes heading into a second season all the more sweet. Thanks to our team at HBO Max, our invested executive producers, and our wildly enthusiastic audience for making another voyage to this world possible."
Very loosely based on true events, Our Flag Means Death follows the story of Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby), an aristocrat who abandons his life of wealth and privilege to pursue a career in piracy. Although he has a ship and a motley crew of sailors behind him, Stede's attempts at being "The Gentleman Pirate" don't yield much success. They do, however, attract the attention of the notorious Blackbeard (Taika Waititi, who is also executive producer on the show), who develops a unique friendship with Stede that blossoms into something more. Together, the pair and their crews fight against rival buccaneers and the English crown in the pursuit of freedom on the high seas.
Upon its release, Our Flag Means Death was met with positive reviews. At the time of writing, it has a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its humor, heart and the performances of Darby and Waititi. Special mention is also paid to Our Flag's unambiguously queer content -- not only centering its story on a gay romance, but featuring Vico Ortiz as Jim Jimenez, a member of the Revenge crew who is openly nonbinary. Jenkins is also known for creating the TBS comedy People of Earth, about a group of alien abductees (and the aliens who abducted them). Waititi is an Academy Award-winning writer and director whose prior works include Boy, Jojo Rabbit and the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder. He and Darby previously worked together in What We Do in the Shadows, Hunt for the Wilderpeople and select episodes of another HBO comedy, Flight of the Conchords.
