The twice-delayed Friends reunion was originally set to debut May 2020 as one of the inaugural offerings on HBO Max, which acquired all 236 episodes of the sitcom for $425 million. However, the Friends special missed the launch thanks to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Filming was rescheduled for August, but that also fell through.

The six cast members and HBO Max have ruled out a virtual reunion, preferring to put on the show before a live audience at its original home in Burbank, Calif. — Stage 24 on the Warner Bros. lot. In May, co-star Lisa Kudrow said to THR, "We haven't all been in the same room in front of people — I mean, we have privately once many years ago but that's it. The whole point of this is to be in the same room. That hasn't changed. And HBO Max is being phenomenally patient and understanding."
