WarnerMedia revealed the most popular titles on HBO Max, in honor of the streaming service's one-year anniversary.

Per the announcement, HBO Max added 11.1 million HBO/HBO Max subscribers following its launch on May 27, 2020, bringing the total number to 44 million. Moreover, it reports having seen a 70% increase in the service's audience engagement versus that for HBO Go or Now. In terms of viewership, HBO Max lists 2020's Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) among its most-viewed non-exclusive movies, along with Kong: Skull Island (2017), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), Wonder Woman 1984 (2020) and the half-dozen Warner Bros. films that've premiered day-and-date in theaters and on streaming in 2021 so far.

HBO Max Year 1 Statistics

With regard to HBO Max exclusives, Game of Thrones is listed among the streamer's most-watched titles, despite having finished its run on HBO a year before the service went live. Other popular Originals include the films Zack Snyder's Justice League and Roald Dahl's The Witches (2020) -- neither of which received a theatrical run -- along with the series The Flight Attendant, Raised by Wolves, The Nevers and Mare of Easttown.

HBO Max's one-year anniversary comes on the heels of AT&T officially merging WarnerMedia companies like Warner Bros. and HBO with Discovery Inc., allowing them to potentially save $3 billion annually. Industry insiders claim the move was largely motivated by WarnerMedia's decision to release Warner Bros.' 2021 films in theaters and on HBO Max day-and-date, which is estimated to cost the studio over $1 billion in related expenses -- assuming the rate at which HBO Max adds subscribers doesn't pick up in the second half of 2021.

In its efforts to attract more subscribers to the service, WarnerMedia announced an ad-supported version of HBO Max that will cost $9.99 per month, as opposed to $14.99 monthly for the ad-free tier. The ad-supported option will include access to "the full HBO Max content catalog, excluding Warner Bros. Same-Day Premiere films debuting in theaters and on HBO Max throughout 2021."

What's more, WarnerMedia is developing multiple Game of Thrones spinoffs for HBO Max, starting with the House Targaryen prequel House of the Dragon. The company is similarly working on a number of DC Extended Universe projects for the streamer, like Peacemaker and a live-action Green Lantern Corps series. However, despite users on social media calling for a Birds of Prey-inspired Black Canary show, there are no official plans for such a spinoff at the moment.
