HBO Max has released a minute-long Peacemaker clip that introduces the titular character's sidekick -- a bald eagle.
The clip shows Christopher Smith/Peacemaker (John Cena) meeting his teammates for a meal at Fennel Fields, dressed in his full Peacemaker outfit. ("Costume? This is a uniform," he scoffs at them.) His co-workers then proceed to mock his attire before asking why he has a bald eagle in his car. "That's Eagly," he replies, much to their amusement.
Created by James Gunn, Peacemaker acts as a spiritual sequel to Gunn's The Suicide Squad. It picks up from the movie's credits scene, which revealed that Peacemaker was still alive after being shot and left for dead by Bloodsport during their mission in Corto Maltese. Among those accompanying Peacemaker on his latest operation are Amanda Waller's subordinates John Economos (Steve Agee) and Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), both of whom are seemingly being punished by Waller for disobeying her orders and helping the Squad defeat Starro the Conqueror.
Peacemaker's other teammates include Danielle Brooks (Orange Is the New Black) as Leota Adebayo, a government agent who's very different from Peacemaker, as far as their political beliefs go. "Peacemaker has a lot to do with where we are politically in this country and that's part of what the show is about," said Gunn in August. "We have Danielle Brooks, someone who in the show is very, very different from Peacemaker, and a lot of the show is about their friendship or lack of a friendship."
The fact that Peacemaker is more or less the same person on the spinoff series as he was in The Suicide Squad is a big part of why Gunn believes his show lends itself to multiple seasons. "At the end of The Suicide Squad, Bloodsport learns a lot. He's a better person than he was at the beginning," noted Gunn in a recent interview. "A lot of the characters are much better than they were at the beginning, and Peacemaker has a lot to learn."
Among Peacemaker's other cast members is Chukwudi Iwuji as Clemson Murn, Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase/Vigilante and Robert Patrick as Peacemaker's father, Auggie Smith. The show begins streaming in January 2022 on HBO Max.
