J.J. Abrams' Justice League Dark TV series on HBO Max is still in the works, according to a new report.
While answering questions for TVLine, Matt Webb Mitovich confirmed that HBO Max is still developing a Justice League Dark show. Last April, it was revealed that Abrams and wife Katie McGrath would be creating three series for the streaming service as part of a new deal. One was a television series based on DC's Justice League Dark, a property with a long history of being in development hell as a movie. Since the news, little additional information regarding the project has been released.
The question itself came in response to Swamp Thing seemingly being up for grabs on the TV end of things. The outlet recently reported that a second season of Swamp Thing was not in the works, even after The CW began airing the former DC Universe show. The series ended after one season, but the head of The CW has teased Swamp Thing could show up in other Arrowverse series like Legends of Tomorrow.
That series prominently features Constantine, himself a key Justice League Dark team member. What's more, but Abrams' HBO Max deal reportedly involves solo series for Constantine and Zatanna, so clearly, characters can exist in both the Arrowverse and the upcoming slate of DC shows on HBO Max. In fact, "Crisis on Infinite Earths" confirmed that many of the disconnected DC movies and TV series actually exist together in the multiverse.
Introduced in 2011 as part of DC's New 52 relaunch of their comic book continuity, Justice League Dark follows a group of supernatural heroes fighting magical and demonic threats outside the scope of the traditional Justice League. The team’s roster has included John Constantine, Madame Xanadu, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna and many more. Details about the roster of the show's team are unknown at the moment, but Constantine and Zatanna appear to be involved.
A Justice League Dark direct-to-video animated film was released in 2017. A sequel, Justice League Dark: Apokolips War released in 2020. On the live-action side of things, Guillermo del Toro was originally attached to direct a film adaptation of the team. Doug Liman boarded after del Toro left due to scheduling conflicts, but Liman also stepped down because of scheduling conflicts, leaving the film's future in question.
