Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams is developing a Justice League Dark TV show and The Shining spinoff series Overlook for HBO Max.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, WarnerMedia has ordered Justice League Dark, Overlook and an original series titled Duster straight to series for the streaming service. Abrams and his wife Katie McGrath will executive produce all three series. Notably, Abrams and McGrath are WarnerMedia exclusive through 2024 thanks to a deal signed in September 2019.

"What an amazing start to our association with the wildly imaginative Bad Robot team under J.J. and Katie," HBO Max's Chief Content Officer Kevin Reilly said in a statement. "What could be better than an original J.J. idea and then Warner Bros. letting them loose on iconic IP from Stephen King and the DC Universe and to provide more must-have programming on HBO Max."

Introduced in 2011 as part of DC Comics’ New 52 relaunch, Justice League Dark follows a group of supernatural heroes fighting magical and demonic threats outside the scope of the traditional Justice League. The team’s roster has included John Constantine, Madame Xanadu, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna and many more. However, details about Abrams' take on the team are being kept under lock and key for now.

While the team has never been adapted for live-action, a Justice League Dark direct-to-video animated film was released in 2017. Guillermo del Toro was originally attached to direct the live-action adaptation, with Doug Liman boarding after he left due to scheduling conflicts. Liman also stepped down because of scheduling conflicts.

Meanwhile, Overlook will be a 10-episode drama that "explores the untold, terrifying stories of the most famous haunted hotel in American fiction," while Duster "revolves around the life of a gutsy getaway driver for a growing crime syndicate who goes from awful to wildly, stupidly, dangerously awful."

HBO Max launches in May, with a specific date yet to be announced.
