Harley Quinn co-creator Justin Halpern has provided a release window for Season 3.

"I think it'll probably come out either the very end of this year or the beginning of [2022]," Halpern told the Masters of None podcast, "just because animation takes so long." Patrick Schumacker, who co-created the animated series with Halpern and Dean Lorey, recently confirmed the show's cast had started recording their lines for Harley Quinn Season 3, with Jim Rash (Riddler), Christopher Meloni (Commissioner Gordon), Diedrich Bader (Batman) and Ron Funches (King Shark) among those set to return so far.

The Harley Quinn TV show follows the titular character as she leaves the Joker to go form her own super-villain team, with the help of her close friend Poison Ivy. Harley Quinn Season 1 debuted to strong reviews on the DC Universe streaming service in Nov. 2019, with the critics' consensus on Rotten Tomatoes describing the series as being "a violently delightful -- and surprisingly insightful -- addition to the DC animated universe."

Harley Quinn returned for Season 2 in April 2020, earning more positive reviews for "[maintaining] its frenetic energy and humor while doubling down on the shenanigans and giving its titular anti-heroine even more room to play." The show's future was subsequently left up in the air until Sep. 2020, when HBO Max announced it had ordered Season 3 amidst DC Universe's restructuring as DC Universe Infinite, a premium comic book subscription service.

Season 2 of Harley Quinn ended with Harley and Ivy becoming a full-blown romantic couple, having gradually evolved from friends to lovers over the course of their adventures together. According to Halpern, Season 3 will focus on Harley and Ivy navigating their romance after years of being in either toxic or unequal relationships, including Ivy's engagement to Kite Man."That's the big thing for us to chew on," Halpern said. "The thing we have discussed preliminarily is the idea that these two characters have had a lot of toxic relationships in their past. Although Ivy and Kite Man wasn't toxic, it also wasn't an equal relationship, you know? He loved her a lot more than she loved him."

Harley Quinn stars Kaley Cuoco, Lake Bell, Diedrich Bader, Alan Tudyk, Rahul Kohli, Christopher Meloni, Tony Hale, Ron Funches, Wanda Sykes, Natalie Morales, Jim Rash, Giancarlo Esposito, Jason Alexander and J.B. Smoove. Seasons 1 and 2 of the series are available to stream on HBO Max.
