Grant Morrison hasn't watched Doom Patrol, even though the HBO Max series is based on their comic book run with artist Richard Case.

Morrison revealed they haven't seen any of the recent movies or TV shows inspired by their work, during an exclusive interview with CBR. "I haven't seen Doom Patrol, and I haven't seen The Batman," they said. "Once I stopped [writing DC superhero comics] on a regular basis, I kind of lost most of my interest. It's hard for me to talk about that stuff with any authority. I hear real good things. I hear bad things. Sometimes I hear mostly good things. So I genuinely don't know."

Characters created by Morrison and Case that have appeared in Doom Patrol since it first aired in February 2019 include Jane/Kay Challis, Flex Mentallo, Willoughby Kipling, The Candlemaker, Red Jack, Danny the Street and the Mister Nobody incarnation of Eric Morden. The series also introduces a reimagined version of The Brotherhood of Dada, now called "The Sisterhood of Dada," which (as in the Doom Patrol comics) is an offshoot of The Brotherhood of Evil.

Although Doom Patrol borrows heavily from the characters and storylines featured in Morrison's run, it also takes its cues from the work of other creators, too. Aside from the obvious influence of Doom Patrol creators Arnold Drake, Bob Haney and Bruno Premiani, the show also lifted junior crime solvers The Dead Boy Detectives from Sandman #25 by Neil Gaiman, Matt Wagner and Malcolm Jones III. HBO Max recently announced that a Dead Boy Detectives spinoff is now in the works, with Jayden Revri and George Rexstrew cast as protagonists Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland, respectively.

The streaming platform has also officially renewed Doom Patrol for a fourth season. While Season 4's release date is not yet known, star April Bowlby previously teased that the show's misfit characters could finally make the transition to fully-fledged superheroes when Doom Patrol returns. "I know Rita is going to [embrace her inner superhero]. I say, "Yes!" I want our superhero costumes," she said.

More recently, Phil Morris gave a further update on Doom Patrol Season 4's status, as well as what's next for his character Silas Stone. "We just are going to start shooting Season 4, so I'm not sure where it's gonna go," he said. "But that's a very great bridge that you built there because you're right, Silas and [Morris' Ghosts of the Ozark's character] Matthew have the same kind of control [issues], but they have an underlying intention that no one knows about. It makes them as committed as anyone on the planet to their journey. That's what I'll say."

Doom Patrol Seasons 1-3 are currently streaming on HBO Max.
