WarnerMedia has announced the arrival of a new animated comedy series, Tom and Jerry in New York, to air on HBO Max.

The upcoming series will see Tom and Jerry move into the Royal Gate Hotel in New York, where their antics will wreak havoc across the city. Tom and Jerry in New York is being directed by Darrell Van Citters, who also serves as producer alongside Ashley Postlewaite. It is scheduled to premiere on July 1.

Tom and Jerry have seen more than one major title this year. This animated series' announcement comes several months after the worldwide box office success of Tom and Jerry, which hit theaters in February and grossed $14.11 million over its opening weekend-- a substantial gain in the pandemic-era.

Despite its box office success, the film received negative reviews upon release, with many criticizing its lack of the pair's antics and heavy focus on drama centered on the live-action human characters. Details concerning the animated series' cast have not yet been released, but it appears that the upcoming series, with its episodic nature and apparent lack of human characters, aims to be a return to form for the franchise.

Before the release of Tom and Jerry, the last major film focused on the Hanna-Barbera heroes was the 1992 Tom and Jerry: The Movie, a musical comedy that also garnered negative reviews and failed to make its $3.5 million budget back, grossing just $3.6 million with its theatrical release.
