The Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon has been renewed for a second season.

HBO has ordered another season of the fantasy drama series, which is based on George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood novel, itself set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The renewal comes after the first episode of House of the Dragon debuted to the largest audience for any new original series in HBO history, having now been seen by over 20 million viewers across linear, On Demand and HBO Max platforms in the U.S., based on a combination of Nielsen data and first-party data.

"Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV. A huge thank you to George, Ryan, and Miguel for leading us on this journey. We couldn’t be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with season two."

The First of Many Game of Thrones Spinoffs

House of the Dragon marks the first Game of Thrones spinoff to be released on HBO with seven additional spinoff series in various stages of development at this time. There are three animated series being developed for HBO Max and four live-action series, with the most notable being a Game of Thrones sequel series centered on Jon Snow. Kit Harington is set to reprise his role in the series, which is in early development at HBO and based off of an idea the actor had for the character. Martin is also involved with the series and has revealed that the working title for the spinoff is Snow.
