HBO's first planned prequel series to Game of Thrones was suddenly cancelled in the midst of principal photography, and parent company WarnerMedia has confirmed the news in an official statement.

News of the cancellation first broke earlier this week, with showrunner Jane Goldman reportedly telling the series' cast and crew on set in Northern Ireland that the premium cable network would not be moving forward with the series in a stunning turn of events. The cancellation was confirmed in a statement from HBO and WarnerMedia.

"After careful consideration, we have decided not to move forward to series with the Untitled Game of Thrones prequel," read a written statement from WarnerMedia. "We thank Jane Goldman, S.J. Clarkson, and the talented cast and crew for all of their hard work and dedication.”

The abrupt cancellation came after months of reported trouble behind-the-scenes for the production, with the pilot starring Naomi Watts and Miranda Richardson filming over this past spring and summer. Creator George R.R. Martin lamented the series' cancellation and commented on his enjoyment collaborating with Goldman for the project.

HBO has since greenlit a separate Game of Thrones prequel titled House of the Dragon, the release date for which is unknown. House of the Dragon is created by George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal, with a pilot from Miguel Sapochnik. It will air on HBO, with a 10-episode season.
