WARNING: The following contains spoilers for 30 Coins Episode 4, "Memories," now airing on HBO.
HBO's 30 Coins has really driven Elena to the edge after she was dragged into a religious conspiracy involving a sinister cult and the biblical Judas' coins. She initially thought Father Vergara could help ward off the supernatural threats coming to the small Spanish town of Pedraza because of the relic, but she quickly realizes these demons are even beyond his reach.
In Episode 4, she reaches a breaking point, and when it seems like she's finally ready to abandon the town, a major character in her life is resurrected. However, there's a demonic twist to it that could place her in even more danger.
Elena's angry that the evil version of Vergara coaxed the townspeople to burn her veterinary clinic down. She's been trying to save them, working alongside Mayor Paco for so long, only to be spat on like this. It's an insult and it's why she threw the coin away, frustrated by how her sacrifice for them was disrespected. Now, people are whispering about an affair between her and Paco, calling her a blight that attracts demonic forces. They also think she's the reason why her husband, Mario, went missing and has been considered dead for a couple of years.
Elena is fed up and decides to take up a job with the playboy, Roque, to travel the world and tend to his animals. Elena's even entertaining a romantic future with him as she's desperate for a change. Even Paco, who admittedly has feelings for her despite being married to Merche, can't convince her to stay, but all that changes when a mysterious woman on the outskirts of town performs a dark ritual.
In the dead of night, she brings a scarecrow to life over a mass of graves in a scary scene. The shell-turned-human walks to town the next morning, looking like a zombie covered in paint and dirt. But when it enters Elena's home and starts to shower, it's revealed to be Mario, her husband. But judging by his entranced look, it's uncertain if this person is human at all. Pedraza has been infiltrated by various demonic agents over the months, so this shaman and her scarecrow could have given rise to another entity that's a pawn of the cult.
All feelings aside, Paco gets to the airport and alerts Elena, setting up another cog in her love life. She never knew why Mario disappeared, so it'll be another heartache if this resurrected being isn't her husband. Either way, this Mario seems like he wants the coin, so Elena will have to follow her head rather than her heart, as he could manipulate her to obtain the relic. More so, her life will be in danger, so Paco and Roque will have to keep a close eye.
