WARNING: The following contains spoilers for 30 Coins Episode 5, "The Double," now airing on HBO.
HBO's 30 Coins pushed Elena emotionally, so much so that she threw away the Judas coin in hopes that all the drama in her life would disappear. Moreover, she felt like this was the only way to stop the demonic curse from spreading through the small Spanish town of Pedraza. But she tries to rebuild her life, Elena finds herself in a love quadrangle with a devilish twist thanks to the relic Judas received for betraying Jesus Christ.
When the supernatural copy of her husband, Mario, tries to jump into the dam where she flung the coin, Elena fights him off and emerges victorious. The entity was pretty angry though, letting her know the Cainites will eventually get it, and that the coin will make its way back to her and the hauntings will never cease.
Now, thanks to Roque, this comes to fruition. He was supposed to take Elena away after the town turned on her, but she opted to stay when she heard Mario was back. She didn't know he was a golem, but sadly, Roque couldn't wait as he had business in Paris. He was also fed up with competing with the mayor, Paco, for her affection, so he left.
But as Roque eats, his chef finds the coin inside a cod. Roque immediately recognizes it as what the possessed girl wanted from Elena's home earlier in the season. His buddy tells him it'll bring good luck and Roque knows it's something he wants to gift back to Elena. He thinks he lost her, but this can get him in her good graces.
What's interesting is many people in town and even Paco's wife, Merche, thinks Paco and Elena are having an affair. This caused Merche to easily join the supernaturally brainwashed mob that burned Elena's vet clinic down. Since then, Merche has had it in for Elena, even going as far as to threaten her life. She turned the relationships into a quadrangle and she won't let up until Elena's removed from the equation.
Merche wants revenge because since Elena came into Paco's life, he's become self-absorbed, ignoring their meat business and love life. This may result in the bitter Merche and Roque teaming up, especially as Elena finally embraces her feelings for Paco. Elena's already been corrupted by the cult and Roque has a lot of hate in him as an entitled rich man. Should they form an alliance, not only would their selfish attitudes lead to the coin ending up in Cardinal Santoro's hands; it could result in the deaths of either Paco or Elena, robbing Father Vergara of allies he desperately needs.
