WARNING: The following contains spoilers for 30 Coins Episode 1, "Cobwebs," now airing on HBO.

HBO's 30 Coins brings down demonic forces on the small Spanish town of Pedraza in search of Judas Iscariot's coin he received after betraying Jesus Christ. Centuries later, it's fallen into the hands of the reclusive Father Vergara, but there's more than meets the eye with this priest as he clearly has something to hide.

In the first episode, the repercussions are immediately felt as a terrifying monster comes after the coin in a sequence that outdoes Lovecraft Country and Stranger Things.

Stranger Things is known for its Demogorgon, but it's the Meat Monster-form the Mind Flayer took in Season 3 that really wowed fans; so much so it influenced movies like Breach, reminiscent of what minds like David Cronenberg, Ridley Scott and John Carpenter would cook up. As for Lovecraft Country, it got wild with its Lovecraftian influences as well, producing an array of monsters such as the multi-tailed Kumiho demon fox, Cthulhu, as well as the Shoggoth vampires. But while 30 Coins mashes all these into its monster, it also throws in some of Stephen King's It.

The series opens up with a calf giving birth to a human baby, leaving the town's mayor, Paco, and vet, Elena, stunned. They cover it up until they can figure out what's going on, but the family believes it's a divine sign. Carmen, the mother, wants to keep the baby as she lost her child years before, but Elena suspects something's off when she visits and sees the child grown and walking. She's horrified and tells Paco this isn't a baby or something from heaven — it might be demonic.

Sadly, by the time they visit, Carmen became fully possessed, killing her husband and leaving him decaying, wrapped up in webs all over the home. She stabs up Paco too, but luckily, Elena escapes and sends Vergara and the authorities over. They kill the possessed woman, chalking it up to delirium. The kid is missing too, but when Paco's ambulance is attacked and Carmen raises from the dead, it's revealed to be something else entirely: a giant spider-baby. The monster is horrifying and really leaves a lasting impression on Paco with the baby's face inside the spider's mouth, demonic and screaming.

Carmen eventually makes her way to Vergara's church, but as Elena hides, she sees him blessing bullets and killing her for good. This encourages the monster to attack as well, and as it gears to devour Vergara and Elena, Paco calls in and shouts that she needs to crush the voodoo doll Carmen was clutching. Elena destroys it and the monster withers away, unsuccessful in the mission to recover the coin. Vergara later tries to downplay everything, suggesting Elena's hallucinating due to PTSD, but she and Paco know they have to protect the town as Vergara brought the devil in.

New episodes of 30 Coins air Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and are also available to stream on HBO Now and HBO Max.
