Hayley Atwell Pays the ‘Emotional Cost’ of ‘Agent Carter’

What can we expect from Agent Carter, the upcoming television series from Marvel and ABC?

According to Hayley Atwell, who has starred as Peggy Carter in two Marvel movies and counting, and will headline the new drama, Agent Carter shines a whole new light on the character.

“My favorite part is something the audiences haven’t seen yet,” she tells TV Line. “It’s the development of her character throughout the series which will be someone who is kind of more three-dimensional, something that women can relate to, as not just the competent, strong, intelligent woman in this workforce, but the psychological, emotional cost. What it takes for a woman to have to sacrifice personal relationships in order to find her place in the world and to fulfill her kind of destiny.”

These themes were present in the Agent Carter Marvel One-Shot that led to the creation of the TV show, but it’s exciting to think about how an eight-episode miniseries can expand those ideas even further.

For now, here’s what we know about Agent Carter: ABC has ordered eight episodes of the series, Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Joe and Anthony Russo will helm the second and third episodes, The First Avenger director Joe Johnston is rumored to tackle the fourth, and it of course stars Atwell.

Many fans hope and expect to see Dominic Cooper reprise his role as Howard Stark — indeed, Cooper himself wants in on the job — but that casting remains unconfirmed. However, one additional character has been confirmed: Edwin Jarvis, the Stark family’s original butler, and the inspiration forTony Stark’s J.A.R.V.I.S. artificial intelligence system. There’s no word on who will play the character, but bringing Paul Bettany into the mix would be a great touch, considering his role as the voice of J.A.R.V.I.S. and, very soon, the Vision.

Beyond Agent Carter, Atwell is expected to resurface in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as soon as Avengers: Age of Ultron, in theaters on May 1, 2015.
