Peggy Carter fans, take note, the pin-up worthy soldier who palled around with Captain America in The First Avenger will not appear in the film's sequel, at least not as played by Hayley Atwell.

While speaking with the actress about her upcoming role in the BBC1 adaptation of William Boyd's spy novel Restless, Time Out London asked about her possible involvement in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. While there's no direct quote, the article notes, "She won’t, she confirms, be back for the [..,]  sequel, which moves the action into the present day."

The news doesn't come as too much of a surprise given the 2011 film's World War II setting; a present-day Peggy Carter would most likely be well into her 90s. That does open the door for Carter's niece Sharon to make her debut as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and Cap's love interest. Sharon Carter played a large role in Ed Brubaker's Captain America comic-book arc from which the sequel takes its name.

Directed by brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, The Winter Soldier is believed to be based on Brubaker's Marvel comics storyline, which revealed Captain America’s sidekick Bucky Barnes didn't die as expected during the war. Instead, an amnesiac Bucky got snatched by the Soviets, fitted with a bionic arm and programmed to serve as an assassin known as the Winter Soldier. The secret is revealed in the present day after Barnes attacks the Red Skull and blows up part of Philadelphia.

We know for sure that Chris Evans will be back as Cap and that Sebastian Stan is returning as Bucky/The Winter Soldier. They will be joined by Anthony Mackie's Falcon, Frank Grillo's Crossobones and, most likely, Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury and Cobie Smulders' Maria Hill. The film is scheduled to open April 4, 2014.
