The following contains spoilers for the "Hawkgirl" backup story from Dark Crisis: Worlds Without a Justice League - Green Lantern #1, on sale now from DC Comics.

The entire DC Universe is mourning the death of the Justice League. However, their grief may be misplaced, as the fallen members of the League are trapped in their own paradise worlds, not blown into oblivion by Pariah as Black Adam believes. Whilst the heroes may be happy that they survived and get to live their lives in bliss, one League member's idea of a perfect world is one in which she gets to die for real.

Although this may come as a surprise considering the Justice League's dire fate, it makes sense to those who know the character. Hawkgirl's perfect world had her on an Indiana Jones-style quest in the backup story of Dark Crisis: Worlds Without a Justice League - Green Lantern #1 (by Jeremy Adams, Jack Herbert, Alex Guimarães, and Troy Peteri). Although she already suffered a kind of death at the hands of Pariah, in this new world all to herself, she was searching for something a lot more permanent.

Hawkgirl Worlds Without a Justice League Mortal

Kendra Sunders' quest was all about finding a mythical artifact that could cure her of her immortality. For those unfamiliar with Hawkgirl, she and her partner Hawkman were cursed centuries ago to live an endless number of lives together. After she dies, she's reborn as someone entirely new. The curse links her to Hawkman too, as their eternal romance is doomed to end in death, life after life. It makes sense then why Hawkgirl's perfect world would revolve around a quest for mortality.

Living these endless lives, all of which are destined to end in the same tragic way, must be incredibly exhausting. If she had actually died during the League's battle with the Dark Army, she would simply be reincarnated again. Whilst she would get to live, all of her friends would have died - and she would be left to wonder why she was the only one who got to live. Having to endure survivors' guilt like that for centuries, and for countless friends and relatives, would make anyone wish for a definitive end.

Usually, if Hawkgirl or Hawkman went on a quest like this, searching for mortality, the thing they were looking for would fail to lift their curse. However, as this world was created to be the perfect paradise for Kendra, her quest was a success. She drank from a strange pink flask and the connection she had to all of her past lives disappeared. Almost as soon as she had done that, she was on the brink of a horrible, pointless death. Oddly though, she welcomed the idea of dying just after becoming mortal, even if she didn't get to enjoy this new lease on life. That's just how much mortality means to her.

Hawkgirl Worlds Without a Justice League Alive

The events of this story beg the question: if Hawkgirl knew what this Earth really was, and what happened when the Justice League faced the Dark Army, would she wish she had died? In a way, this perfect world is just like another one of her countless lives. She wouldn't want that. Sadly, Kendra would wish to have died in that battle. At least then she would have been reincarnated back on Earth where her life could mean something, rather than being the unwitting pawn of Pariah.

However, Pariah's actual plan for her may be to give her exactly what she wanted. At the end of this story, the villain of Dark Crisis stepped out of the shadows, laughing. He hasn't appeared in any of the other worlds thus far, instead manipulating them in the remains of the old, dead multiverse. It could be that Hawkgirl's quest for mortality was more real than first realized. The limits of these Dark Crisis worlds haven't been tested yet and it's unknown how real everything in them really is. It's a very real possibility that Kendra got her to wish, and she really is mortal now.

It has been teased that one of the members of the fallen Justice League will die for real during Dark Crisis. Could Hawkgirl be that member? It makes sense that she should be the one to die, as it would be the most meaningful death. Out of everyone on the team, she's the one who will go on living life after life when everyone else is gone. As well as that, it looks like Pariah has plans for her, making her mortal and keeping an eye on her too. Maybe Kendra Saunders has a bigger role in this event than first thought.
