WARNING: The following article contains minor spoilers for the season finale of Hawkeye, streaming now on Disney+.

In the season finale of Marvel Studios' Hawkeye, the character of Wilson Fisk/Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio) wears one of his showier outfits from the comics, sporting a bright red floral print shirt under his signature white suit jacket. According to D'Onofrio, this nod to the source material is something he pitched to the wardrobe department himself.

The tropical-themed outfit Kingpin wears in much of the Hawkeye finale originates from the 2014 Marvel comic Amazing Spider-Man: Family Business by Mark Waid, James Robinson, Gabriele Dell'Otto and Werther Dell'Edera. Perhaps the most striking image of Fisk in this getup comes in the form of Dell'Otto's cover.

"I may have told you this before, but the screensaver on my computer is that Family Business cover of him in that shirt," D'Onofrio told ComicBook.com. "It has been for several years. And yeah, that is something that I brought to the table for Hawkeye."

Kingpin in Disney+'s Hawkeye series

D'Onofrio starred as Wilson Fisk throughout all three seasons of the Netflix series Marvel's Daredevil from 2015 to 2018, serving as the primary antagonist of Seasons 1 and 3. His reprisal in Hawkeye coincides with Daredevil lead Charlie Cox reprising his role as Matt Murdock/Daredevil in Sony and Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, whereas Cox was supposedly in contact with Marvel about returning as Daredevil for a number of years, D'Onofrio says he wasn't approached to return as Kingpin until after Hawkeye had already entered production.

With Marvel Television having been phased out and Marvel Studios now producing its own content for the small screen via Disney+, fans have wondered if Marvel TV productions like Daredevil would still be considered canon to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or if any returning characters would be rebooted. However, D'Onofrio himself believes that the version of Kingpin seen in Hawkeye and the one seen back in Daredevil are indeed one and the same.

Notably, much like Matt Murdock's transformation into Daredevil, Wilson Fisk's transformation into Kingpin in Netflix's Daredevil is portrayed as a slow burn. In fact, D'Onofrio did not even wear Kingpin's iconic white suit until the show's third and final season, having worn primarily black and blue suits in Season 1 before sporting prison attire in Season 2. When asked why Fisk did not wear the white suit in Season 1, D'Onofrio told CinemaBlend, "Because he's not Kingpin yet. It's an origin story, so he's working towards becoming Kingpin -- or the world is working him towards becoming Kingpin, I should say."

By the time Kingpin pops up in Hawkeye, he's already wearing the white suit, sporting an actual dress shirt underneath the jacket before swapping it for the aforementioned floral print shirt. Hawkeye also adds another element from Kingpin's comic book wardrobe in the form of his diamond-handle walking stick.
