Hawkeye star Jeremy Renner posted a new behind-the-scenes photo from the set, showing off the tattoos his character Clint Barton had done sometime after the events of Avengers: Infinity War when he became Ronin.

The full sleeve of intricately designed Ronin-themed artwork features a dragon coiled below a skull and full traditional Japanese armor. The photo, posted to Twitter, was captioned with a cheeky "I'll be home for Christmas," alluding to the ongoing filming schedule Renner and the crew of the upcoming Disney+ series have been keeping in New York City to coincide with the show, which takes place during Christmas.

The post also implies that audiences can expect Ronin to make a dramatic appearance in the plot. Ronin was Clint Barton's alternate identity during the events of Avengers: Endgame, when he abandoned his link with the Avengers after his family was killed in The Snap at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. This loss sent Barton down a dark path in which he exchanged his arrows for a katana and adopted the persona of Ronin: a vigilante who spent his time hunting down criminals in Japan.

The character Ronin was created by Brian Michael Bendis and Joe Quesada, taking the name from the Japanese term for a samurai without a lord or master.

The new Hawkeye series promises to explore not only Clint's current journey passing on the Hawkeye mantle to Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), but will also offer more information about what happened during Clint's time as Ronin. This may involve another character taking on the alias he left behind.

The show will introduce Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), a deaf Native American superhero called Echo whose powers include "photographic reflexes." This allows her to mimic the moves of her opponents, making her a formidable martial artist. In 2005, Echo took on the title of Ronin in The New Avengers #11 (by Brian Michael Bendis, David Finch and Danny Miki). While Echo's relationship with both Bishop and Barton is yet to be determined, there are various possibilities for the two Ronins to decide the future of their identities.

Hawkeye stars Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton, Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop, Jolt as Pizza Dog/Lucky, Vera Farmiga as Eleanor Bishop, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Fra Fee as Kazi, Tony Dalton as Jack Duquesne/Swordsman, Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez/Echo and Zahn McClarnon as William Lopez. The Disney+ series has yet to receive a premiere date.
