Hawkeye star Jeremy Renner says that the late Black Widow's post-Avengers: Endgame presence will be felt throughout the upcoming Marvel Studios and Disney+ series, having influence on Clint Barton's newfound friendship with Kate Bishop.
While speaking to Decider, Renner revealed what kind of an impact he believed Natsha Romanoff's previously mentioned presence had on Hawkeye. "I think it's quite a huge one," Renner said. "I think [his relationship with Black Widow] informs Clint and Kate's bond. I mean, I think as Kate learns [about Clint's bond with Natasha], the audience learns. I think it's so beautiful. It's, you know, just defining of how Clint sees what the job of being a superhero is. Yeah, [Black Widow is] sprinkled throughout [the show] and always a part of what Clint is, for sure."
Prior to Renner's comments about Black Widow's shadow looming over Hawkeye, it was revealed that Black Widow star Florence Pugh would reprise her role as Yelena Belova in the series, supposedly for several episodes.
Of course, Clint Barton will still have some unease in regards to his friend and teammate's death in Endgame, as series executive producer and director Rhys Thomas revealed that the in-universe play Rogers: The Musical will bring about that feeling in addition to being the reason why Clint is in New York City.
"Obviously, deeper down, [watching the musical] eventually conjures up the emotional connection with Natasha and that trauma [of losing her]," Thomas explained. "That was the fun line with that scene, I think -- having this kind of light exterior and a fun sequence but ultimately digging at that other level of Clint that's going on."
However, Rogers: The Musical will not just serve a dramatic role in Hawkeye, as Thomas revealed that it was also created to draw the ire of the Avenging Marksman. "I just had this image of Jeremy's world-weary face sitting in a Broadway theater watching it," he stated. "It was just all about again anything that annoys Clint that felt right."
As for Clint Barton's aforesaid relationship with Kate Bishop, Renner recently delved into it during a press conference for Hawkeye while answering questions with his co-star and Kate's actor Hailee Steinfeld. "You know, I don't operate -- I suppose it was survivor guilt, outside just dealing with the loss," the actor commented. "Then, there's a lotta things that are lost. You know what I mean? It's addressed in the show, which I think is beautifully intimate. It brings our characters closer together, as well as the audience, I think. There's a lotta weight that's carried. There might be a seemingly veneer of grumpiness in this resting face, right, in the show."
Hawkeye's first two episodes premiere Nov. 24 on Disney+.
