It's unclear if Marvel Cinematic Universe mainstay and resident Avengers archer Hawkeye will be returning to the superhero team following the events of his upcoming Disney+ series.
During a recent interview with GamesRadar+, Clint Barton/Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner revealed that he doesn't have a clear line of sight for the archer's future in the MCU. Though Renner admits to not knowing what's in store for Hawkeye after the Disney+ series, the actor is confident his character will at least go out with a bang. "I don't have a crystal ball, or I'm not a soothsayer," Renner said. "But having Hailee [Steinfeld] come in, and these characters, I think it opens it up for six great episodes for this event type of television. After that, I have no idea. But these six episodes are pretty exciting."
One change Hawkeye is set to undergo is that to his hearing, with Renner confirming last month that Clint Barton will experience a similar case of hearing loss as he did in the comics. Kate Bishop will also be pulled from the panels, as Steinfeld is set to portray the aspiring archer in the character's live-action debut. As such, Renner's mention of Steinfeld coming in could suggest Kate will be taking up the mantle of Hawkeye moving forward. Other characters Hawkeye is expected to bring into the MCU include Clown, a murderous marksman, and Echo, a deaf Native American superhero.
Hawkeye will not only be looking forward, however, as one of the show's directors has commented on how it will also be addressing Clint's time as the masked vigilante Ronin during the Blip. "He wanted the darkness," said Bert (one half of the directing duo Bert & Bertie). "He wanted to go there. And there are moments that the Ronin Clint resurfaces. It's very important to have those depths that you can explore, so that he can come out of it."
Whatever the end result Hawkeye holds for Clint's future as the Avenging Archer, the director promised fans a story that's both unexpected and absurd. "It's an absurd Christmas story," said Bert. "Just starting from that point, tonally, I was tickled. What does that mean? And it's throughout the whole series. It's not what you're expecting it to be."
Hawkeye will premiere its first two episodes when the series begins streaming Nov. 24 on Disney+.
