In Hawkeye: Freefall, Clint Barton has gotten himself in a big mess. In order to go after the Hood, Clint acquires Kang the Conqueror's time-travel tech to travel one hour into the future. With a double of himself, he acts as both Ronin and Hawkeye. No one can suspect he is both, except some people have already figured it out, such as the Hood's tech guy Bryce (who is now on Clint's side) and Natasha Romanoff, aka the Black Widow.
Things are unraveling at a rapid rate and Clint has to figure out how to get out of this mess before it gets even worse. In Hawkeye: Freefall #3, he starts by stealing a Life Model Decoy of himself and in issue #4, he convinces a shape-shifting Skrull to take his likeness. Yes, there are plenty of Clint Bartons running around in Hawkeye: Freefall #4 -- and it leads to a great joke about the character's most ridiculous costume.
In Hawkeye: Freefall #3, Clint and Bryce steal a robot duplicate of the Avenging Archer from S.H.I.E.L.D. and take it to his apartment. The LMD quickly proves itself to be troublesome, as its presence in Clint's apartment leads to a big fight with his new girlfriend. What also doesn't help matters is that the LMD is naked, which makes it all the more of a startling presence in the living room.
Therefore, in Hawkeye: Freefall #4, Clint has moved the LMD to the building's basement and he's given him one of his old costumes to wear -- but it's not one of his purple Hawkeye costumes. No, this is the red and blue (and revealing) outfit Clint wore back when he assumed the identity of the size-altering Goliath. After operating for years as Hawkeye, Clint became Goliath in 1969's Avengers #63. When Hank Pym took on the identity of Yellowjacket, Clint succeeded him in becoming the new Goliath. To do so, Clint took on a new costume that didn't offer much coverage.
The costume was clearly a product of its time and it certainly sticks out today, especially when Hawkeye is now a much more tactical superhero. This is likely why the character ends up mocking his own outfit in Freefall #4, when Bryce first sees the Goliath costume and asks, "You used to wear this?"
In answer, Clint says, "I had a couple of weird phases." Not only does this mock the costume, it also acknowledges the character's change in superhero identity, which lasted up until the conclusion of the "Kree/Skrull War" in 1972. Clint becoming Goliath was certainly a surprising change in direction for the character, and the brief return of the Goliath costume finally allows him to recognize it was, admittedly, a weird flex.
