Hawkeye has its sights set on a grand finale to its first season.
During an interview with BadTaste.it, director and executive producer Rhys Thomas spoke briefly about what fans can expect in the finale of Hawkeye Season 1. Careful not to give too much away, Thomas described the lead-up to the finale as something that builds upon itself and which ultimately leads to what he believes will be both a satisfying Season 1 conclusion and a standalone ending. "Things just snowball and get bigger and bigger," Thomas said. "And so, I think we deliver something big in the finale for everyone -- but it's also lovely because it is also kind of a self-contained story. "
As for what that "something big" might be, the Season 1 finale of Hawkeye could involve aspiring archer Kate Bishop taking over the role of the sharpshooter moving forward. With Clint Barton/Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner unsure of what's in store for his character after the series, and with Kate Bishop actor Hailee Steinfeld providing a carefully worded answer when asked about Young Avengers, it seems Hawkeye's "big" finale may mean changes to a number of characters. The show may also set up the recently confirmed Echo series, which follows the titular Native American superhero Maya Lopez/Echo, who makes her live-action debut played by Alaqua Cox in Hawkeye.
Having just released its first two episodes of the six-episode season, Hawkeye takes place two years after the events of Avengers: Endgame and follows Clint attempting to make it back to his family in time for Christmas. Standing in his way, however, are various enemies Clint made as the vengeful killer Ronin. The Tracksuit Mafia from the acclaimed Hawkeye comic run by Matt Fraction and David Aja will also be making an appearance alongside Lucky the Pizza Dog and the sadistic assassin Clown.
Early reviews for Hawkeye have been generally favorable, with a "Fresh" rating of 88 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Though some critics found the pace a drag at times, the consensus is that the chemistry between Renner's Clint and Steinfeld's Kate managed to make up for the issues, as did the street-level action scenes.
Hawkeye's two-episode premiere is currently streaming on Disney+.
