When Clint Barton's (Jeremy Renner) family appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultron, it caused controversy among fans. Some of them wanted Clint to be romantically involved with other characters, like Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) or Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) but the idea of Clint Barton, Secret Family Man was contentious even outside of that. Nevertheless, Clint's family became an integral part of his identity from then on, so much so that when they were all seemingly killed in the Blip, he went on a murderous rampage. They've since returned, but trailers for Disney+'s Hawkeye hint that Clint may not be living in domestic bliss.

His wife Laura (Linda Cardellini) didn't even appear in the first Hawkeye trailer, which caused some fans to speculate that their marriage had ended. Surely the kind of man that went off the rails after losing his family would want to spend as much time as possible with said family when they returned. The kids were certainly shown exploring New York with him, but Laura was nowhere to be seen.

Of course, it's possible that she stayed back at the farm to look after it or because she had another commitment she couldn't get out of; it's also possible that she and Clint decided that the kids needed some one-on-one (or three-on-one) time with him. The timing, however, seems odd. Laura was Blipped with the kids, but it wasn't like they were all on a separate five-year vacation without Clint. Furthermore, the show takes place at Christmastime, which is historically the season to spend with family and loved ones.

Laura does appear in the new Hawkeye trailer, but only briefly, speaking to Clint over the phone. "Let me guess, you're gonna need another day," she says, her tone of voice and expression suggesting resignation and frustration. There's someone, probably their son Cooper (Ben Sakamoto), in the background, which shows that this conversation takes place after the kids have already returned home -- they were also shown leaving the city without Clint in the first trailer. That begs the question: did Clint plan to spend time in the city by himself or was this purely to accommodate the bad guys suddenly pursuing him?

It's also possible that Clint was planning on doing Avengers business after the kids left, but, again, it's Christmastime. One would expect a family man so recently reunited with his beloveds to spend every moment at their sides. Clint hadn't even been an active Avenger for years prior to the Blip, so it's a little odd that he'd suddenly have pressing commitments; he doesn't even refer to other Avengers or related business in the trailers.

The darker option, and one that some fans have speculated about, is that Clint and Laura's relationship is on the rocks. Their difficulties could stem from the fact that Clint has Avengers duties that keep him apart from his family, but that wasn't a problem for them in the past and considering that Cooper and Lila appear to be in their early teens, they've presumably been married for over a decade. Alternatively, perhaps Laura discovered that Clint went on a killing spree in her absence and that put a strain on their relationship.

During the Blip, Clint went around the world murdering criminals because he felt that they didn't deserve to live while his family had disappeared and presumably died. While all of the Avengers have probably killed criminals at some time or another, being a superhero and fighting criminals sometimes to the death is very different than actively pursuing criminals with the intent of killing them. It stands to reason that Laura would have issues with her husband suddenly being a serial killer. Another possible point of contention could be Natasha's death. Although in that situation, it was clearly Clint or Natasha, the loss might weigh on both of them, considering Laura was also shown to be close with Natasha.

It remains to be seen if Clint and Laura are actually suffering marital difficulties; fans won't know for sure until Hawkeye has aired. It would be upsetting to see the Barton family split up, but it would also be understandable if Laura had finally reached her breaking point.

To see how Clint and Laura are doing post-Endgame, Hawkeye premieres on Nov. 24 on Disney+.
