Featuring much of the same cast and crew, The Haunting of Bly Manor has quickly proven to be a much different take on the ghost story sub-genre than its predecessor, The Haunting of Hill House.

An extended behind-the-scenes featurette goes into the storytelling decisions made to subvert expectations for typical ghost story fare, from what the ghosts in Bly Manor should represent to how the menacing Lady of the Lake spectre was developed.

Series creator and showrunner Mike Flanagan had no interest in repeating what he had done in Hill House for Bly Manor, feeling that "nothing is more boring than a normal ghost," while also deciding to make them personifications of the show's themes and living characters' emotions.

In addition to subverting tropes, the featurette takes a closer look at the series' eighth episode, taking place in the manor's ghostly past. The episode's literary and cinematic influences are shown, complete with side-by-side comparisons to Bly Manor's visual inspirations, with the episode serving as a love letter to author Henry James and adaptations of James and Shirley Jackson's works.

Streaming now on Netflix, The Haunting of Bly Manor stars Victoria Pedretti, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Amelia Eve, T'Nia Miller, Rahul Kohli, Tahirah Sharif, Amelie Bea Smith, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Henry Thomas, with Kate Siegel, Katie Parker, Alex Essoe and Matthew Holness.
