This might be good news for fans of the Universal Monsters. Badass Digest theorizes the film has turned the upcoming Dracula Untold into a prologue for the Marvel-style shared universe that had been planned to launch in 2016 with the latest version of The Mummy.
This situation actually mirrors what happened with Marvel Studios and its 2008 films Iron Man and Incredible Hulk. The features were shot independently, and when fans went nuts over Samuel L. Jackson's post-credits cameo in Iron Man, the studio whipped up an Incredible Hulk post-credits scene for Robert Downey Jr. -- thus tying together the two previously separate films in one universe.
Production on Dracula Untold, which opens Oct. 10, apparently commenced before Universal decided to link its monster properties -- which includes Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, the Wolf Man and the Invisible Man, among others -- into a cohesive universe.
According to sources that have seen Untold, something has been added during reshoots that hints toward the larger Universal Monsters world. Badass Digest has no specifics to report yet, but word is that this addition might be enough to call Dracula Untold a prologue to The Mummy.
The Mummy is expected for release on June 24, 2016, and will be directed by Alex Kurtzman.
