The Hulk is the strongest one there is, and that's been a blessing and a curse. The Hulk is a monster that can barely be considered a hero; an almost elemental force in the world that destroys everything in front of him when the mood strikes him. Bruce Banner is a deeply troubled man, and the gamma bomb unleashed all of that on the world. While he has done good things, the destruction often outweighs the good.

10 The Hulk Won't Let Bruce Banner Die

Bruce Banner's Suicide Attempts

Bruce Banner's mental problems are the genesis of the Hulk. Bruce Banner has, at times, despaired over his existence as the Hulk and tried to take his own life. The Hulk won't let that happen though. He's become his own being and doesn't want to die. Every time Banner has tried to kill himself, the Hulk has taken control.

Banner has tried to jump off buildings and transformed before he hit the ground. He's tried to shoot himself in the head but became the Hulk before the bullet hit. Banner has wanted to die so many times, but the Hulk will never allow it.

9 The Hulk's Life Is Constant Pain

Gamma radiation made the Hulk who he is, but that is not a good thing. While the Hulk is fueled by Banner's rage at the world, his anger also comes from the fact that he's constantly in pain. The gamma radiation burns within him and when he first turned into the Jade Giant, that pain drove him in the worst possible ways.

Being around the Sentry helped that pain and, as the years have gone by, he's learned to live with it but it's still a horrible thing. While it's certainly not an excuse for all of the monstrous things he's done, it does give a good reason for his rage.

The Hulk's greatest enemies aren't supervillains but the military and other superheroes. Bruce Banner's identity isn't a secret, so everyone knows all of the things he's done. Unlike others, Bruce Banner can rarely have a normal life. The best he can hope for is working with organizations like S.H.I.E.L.D., but he can never have a life outside of being the Hulk.

7 The Hulk And Banner Hate Each Other

The relationship between Hulk and Banner is contentious. While there have been times when they have been integrated, for the most part, the two hate each other. Banner realizes just how much the Hulk has ruined his life and has often gone to extremes in the hopes of ending the Hulk.

Hulk hates Banner because he's puny. The Hulk takes pride in his power and the freedom it gives him. He sees Banner as a waste because being Banner takes away from his life. He also knows that Banner would destroy him if he could. The hatred between the two has put them at odds for years.

6 No Matter What The Hulk Does He'll Never Be A Hero

The Hulk is very different from Marvel's other heroes. While many of them have found themselves at odds with the government, they don't have anything on the Hulk. The Hulk has caused untold destruction; at this point, there's no way that he can be considered a hero at all, no matter what he does.

Even working with the Defenders or the Avengers doesn't do any good. In the eyes of many, the Hulk will always be a monster. It doesn't matter if he helps save the world; all anyone remembers is him smashing small towns in Nevada or when he and the Warbound attacked New York City.

The Hulk's comics have done a lot of unique things. One of them has been presenting Banner as a villain. While there have been times when other heroes have gone evil, Banner is very different. He was tormented as a child and that exacerbated the mental conditions that would eventually create the Hulk, but it also made him open to going to terrible extremes.

Bruce Banner has been changed by his time as the Hulk and what was done to him before. While Banner isn't always as bad as the Hulk, there have been times when the Hulk was the good one of the two. The Hulk is a monster but Banner can be just as horrible.

4 His Relationships With His Peers Is Horrendous

Hulk vs Wolverine

While calling the Hulk a superhero is a road too far, he does associate with them. Those relationships aren't usually good; the Hulk hates most of the heroes and they don't exactly feel good towards him either. While they'll work with him when they have to, most of the heroes would rather not be anywhere near the Hulk.

Marvel's heroes can be a contentious lot, but they at least have cliques; the Avengers and X-Men don't always get along but the two groups do get along internally. Hulk barely has anyone who he can associate with and he and the other heroes have fought too many times to actually be friends.

3 He Can Never Be Happy

The Hulk does not have a pleasant life. At times, the Hulk and Banner have both found love or lives that they enjoyed, but they never get to keep them. Bruce married Betty Ross but their relationship ended and has never been rekindled. The Hulk liked being Joe Fixit but that ended. Planet Hulk saw the Hulk find actual happiness but that wasn't to last either.

The Hulk has done a lot of bad in the world, but there were times when he just wanted to be left alone. There have been times when the Hulk deserved a chance at a quiet life and yet he's never allowed to be happy, no matter what form he's in.

2 Bruce Banner Was Terribly Abused As A Child

Bruce Banner's father was an abusive alcoholic. He hated Bruce and was jealous of him because he felt that Bruce took all of his wife's attention. He ended up killing his wife and eventually, Bruce killed him. All of this left the scars that created the Hulk and are the key to the multiple changes the Hulk has gone through over the years.

Bruce Banner's life was defined by his abuse. The pain of it has never left him and is the biggest factor in any wrongdoing he or the Hulk are guilty of. He never had a chance at a normal life and all of the rage manifested itself when the gamma bomb blast hit him and unleashed Hulk.

1 Every Future For The Hulk Is Terrible

Old Man Logan Hulk and Old Man Logan Maestro

Dark futures and the Marvel Universe go together like peas in a pod. The Hulk's are especially bad, though. In just about every future, the Hulk is a villain or monster. There's a future where he's known as the Maestro and he killed all of the heroes and villains, creating his own kingdom. In Old Man Logan's future, he joined the villains in killing the heroes and ruled his own territory with an iron fist alongside his Hulk Gang. In Hulk: The End, he was the last living thing on Earth.

There is no good future for the Hulk. He never gets a happy ending. The best he can hope for is at least having power, but even then he gets it by killing and destroying others. His life never ends well.
