UPDATE: 2022/09/06 11:27: Since this story was published, Chis Pine's representative issued a statement to Variety denying the spitting incident. "This is a ridiculous story — a complete fabrication and the result of an odd online illusion that is clearly deceiving and allows for foolish speculation. Just to be clear, Harry Styles did not spit on Chris Pine. There is nothing but respect between these two men and any suggestion otherwise is a blatant attempt to create drama that simply does not exist." The following is the story's original content.

Internet commentators are convinced that Harry Styles spat on his Don't Worry Darling costar Chris Pine.

The footage comes from the Venice Film Festival, while Styles was taking his seat for Don't Worry Darling's Sept. 5 premiere. Before he sits down, Styles appears to spit at the feet of Pine, who stares down and stops clapping before laughing the moment off. Olivia Wilde, seated on the other side of Pine, also seems to take notice of the occurrence, while Styles himself appears entirely unfazed. In response to the footage, fans on Twitter have called for community-led investigations into the incident, which has already produced at least one other piece of footage from another angle. There have also been plenty of memes produced in light of the incident, referencing everything from Seinfeld to Jay Leno. At the time of writing, neither Styles nor Pine has addressed the incident.

Don't Worry Darling sees Styles, Pine, and Wilde, who also directed, star alongside Florence Pugh and Gemma Chan in a 1950's thriller set in the seemingly perfect company town of Victory California. The apparent utopia is a product of the enigmatic company that Styles' Jack Chambers works for as part of the "Victory Project." Pugh's Alice Chambers' increasing curiosity soon reveals dark secrets about both the project and the town, all of which culminate in unsettling tensions within Victory. Pine is set to portray Frank in the film, Jack's boss and the enigmatic founder of the "Victory Project."

Despite the drama generated by the brief clip, many critics were left wanting when it came to Don't Worry Darling. Many reviewers felt that while Pugh delivered a compelling performance, she was alone in her efforts as both Pine and Styles were flat in terms of their acting and characterizations. Beyond this, many noted that the script felt incomplete, hinging on a twist that was foreshadowed by the film's premise.

Apart from their previous genre works, Styles, Pine, and Wilde have also made a name for themselves across various Marvel properties. Styles, who appeared in 2021's Eternals as Eros/Starfox, previously joked about the possibility of not returning to reprise the role in a future Marvel Cinematic Universe film. "It'd be funny if that was it, wouldn't it?" he said.

Don't Worry Darling is set to arrive in theaters on Sept. 23.
