Harry Potter Unseats Dark Knight, Smashes Box Office Records

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, the final installment of Warner Bros.’ blockbuster fantasy franchise, raked in a staggering $476 million in its worldwide debut, smashing the record set in 2009 by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince with $394 million.

With its $168.6 million North American opening, Deathly Hallows also unseated 2008’s The Dark Knight ($158.4 million) as the top three-day weekend debut of all time.

“Harry Potter is truly a cultural phenomenon the world over,” Veronika Kwan-Rubinek, Warner Bros.’ president of international distribution, said in a statement. “Whether in German, French, Japanese, Russian, or any language, international audiences have embraced the Harry Potter films over the years, with the powerful finale punctuating just how special the property is.”
