Harry Potter Spinoff ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Now a Trilogy

Warner Bros. has confirmed that J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter spinoff, Fantastic Beasts and Where to find Them, is being developed as a full-fledged trilogy.

Announced in September, the project is inspired by the Hogwarts textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and the adventures of its fictitious author Newt Scamander. Rowling makes her screenwriting debut with the first feature, which The New York Times reports begins in New York about seven decades before the events of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

The news appears — alongside details about a more “aggressive” approach to bring DC Comics properties to the screen — in a profile of Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara, who was key to convincing Rowling to expand her deal with the studio.

“When I say he made Fantastic Beasts happen, it isn’t P.R.-speak but the literal truth,” she told the newspaper. “We had one dinner, a follow-up telephone call and then I got out the rough draft that I’d thought was going to be an interesting bit of memorabilia for my kids and started rewriting!”
