It's important to remember the ongoing controversial statements by the creator of the Harry Potter franchise. CBR supports the hard work of industry professionals on properties fans know and love, and the wider world of Harry Potter that fans have adopted as their own. You can find CBR's continuing coverage on Rowling here.

Hogwarts Legacy has gained more traction as an engaging RPG that allows players to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Unlike the previous Harry Potter games, players can create their own avatars and become students. Hogwarts Legacy improves on this by allowing players to select their houses, rather than placing them automatically in Gryffindor.

Players can join either Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, or Ravenclaw. Although Gryffindor was the heroes' house in Harry Potter, it wasn't always the best house. Each house has its pros and cons, which might help players decide which is the best house in Hogwarts Legacy to select.

Updated on December 16, 2023 by Mayra Garcia: With Hogwarts Legacy hitting the Nintendo Switch, this video game has risen in popularity again. One of the most important decisions the players must make is which Hogwarts house to choose. Since each house has its pros and cons, they should really think this through. We have updated this list to comply with CBR standards.

Gryffindor Is Harry's House, But That’s Pretty Much It

Pro: Gryffindor Is Iconic

Lupin and Tonks Deserved a Better Ending in Harry Potter
Lupin and Tonks' relationship exemplified exceptional Harry Potter storytelling, but J.K. Rowling fell short on giving them the ending they deserved.

Ever since the start of Harry Potter, Gryffindor has been the most popular house. In the Harry Potter series, fans considered Gryffindor to be the "main" house because Harry Potter and his best friends were Gryffindors, and they helped save the Wizarding World from Voldemort. The house also only selected brave, heroic, and chivalrous students.

For players who want nostalgia, being in Gryffindor gives them the chance to reside in the iconic Common Room and spot some of the Easter eggs from the books and movies. Another benefit to being in Gryffindor is that players can interact with well-known characters, such as the Fat Lady, and greet legacy characters, such as Professor Gareth Weasley.

Con: Gryffindor Isn't Any More Heroic Than The Other Houses

Gryffindors were the heroes in Harry Potter, but not so much in Hogwarts Legacy. Harry Potter impacted his own story because he was the main character, but players won't have any distinct impact on the game's story. Like every other house in Hogwarts Legacy, Gryffindor players get their own side quests and companions.

This ultimately means that being a Gryffindor player does not guarantee any kind of special treatment, even if Gryffindors got preferential treatment in the original story. Gryffindor might have been the central house in the books and movies, but in Hogwarts Legacy, Gryffindor is no more important than the others.

Ravenclaws Don’t Get Many Side Quests, But It Opens The Door To Beautiful Places

Harry Potter's Dementors Are Even Scarier Under Their Hoods
The Harry Potter universe's Dementors have always been terrifying. But what they look like under their hoods brings out the real horror.

Ravenclaw has a somewhat better reputation than Hufflepuff, especially since some notable members include Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter. This house has some of the most intelligent and academia-focused students who typically master their craft. Key Ravenclaw traits include natural curiosity and creativity.

Aesthetics-wise, Ravenclaw also has one of the most beautiful common rooms out of all the Hogwarts Legacy houses, as it emphasizes the students' desire to excel in magic. The common room is large, and its decor has an appealing astrological theme that perfectly suits the creative, imaginative Ravenclaw students. Also, Ravenclaw players are lucky enough to befriend intriguing students such as the gentlemanly historian Amit Thakkar.

Con: Ravenclaw Doesn't Get Many Side-Quests

Amit Thakkar in Hogwarts Legacy

As sharp and intellectual as Ravenclaw students are, there is surprisingly not much for them to do in Hogwarts Legacy. In the game, Ravenclaw players don't have many side-quests. Compared to the exciting adventures Hufflepuff and the other houses get to enjoy, Ravenclaws somewhat miss out.

While Ravenclaw players have a companion in Amit Thakkar, he, unfortunately, does not accompany them on their exclusive quest. However, Ravenclaws can still visit the Owlery to achieve their own trophy, so they can accomplish something. But if players are looking for more unique and personalized content they may not be the best choice of a house.

Hufflepuff Is An Incredibly Underrated House, Even In The Game

Pro: Hufflepuff Kindness Pays Off

Ron and Hermione held their place as Harry Potter’s best romantic relationship, but Fantastic Beasts' Queenie and Jacob surpassed them.

Hufflepuff has been an underrated house for years, but it is starting to receive more credit for being one of the most hardworking houses. This extends into Hogwarts Legacy, as Hufflepuff is considered the kindest house with some of the most loyal students.

In Hogwarts Legacy, Hufflepuff's kindness also pays off as players have the privilege of going on an exclusive side quest to Azkaban. Azkaban is one of the most iconic locations in Harry Potter lore, and Hufflepuff players can also witness the Patronus charm being used against Dementors. To make things better, no other house has this opportunity.

Con: Hufflepuff Tends To Be Neglected

Although fans have started to defend Hufflepuff as one of the better houses, its somewhat poor reputation hasn't quite faded. While this doesn't impact the story in Hogwarts Legacy, some players still feel tempted to select a different house.

While Hufflepuff's main traits are loyalty and kindness, these positive attributes don't appeal to every player. Hufflepuff students lack competitive drive and ambition compared to other houses like Slytherin or Gryffindor. Depending on the player's preference, Hufflepuff's good-natured and easygoing vibes might not be a good fit for players who want a challenge.

Hogwarts Legacy Redeems Slytherin, But Only To An Extent

Pro: Slytherin Is The Most Ambitious House

The Slytherin Common Room in Hogwarts Legacy

Although fans have always seen Slytherin as second-best to Gryffindor, it's still an impressive house. Hogwarts Legacy demonstrates that Slytherin students aren't as nefarious as Harry Potter had portrayed them. In fact, Slytherin is the most popular Hogwarts Legacy house.

The favoritism toward Gryffindor in Harry Potter does play a factor, as Slytherin players join to avoid following the Gryffindor hype. Players can also enjoy some of the house's iconic features from the books and films. Another big pro to joining Slytherin is the interesting side quests that include a new, charismatic companion in the form of Sebastian Sallow.

Con: Slytherin's Bad Reputation Follows Them

Slytherin has received a spike in popularity thanks to being the most popular Hogwarts Legacy house, but this doesn't mean everyone has grown to like the house. Some fans still remember Slytherin as the "evil" house from the Harry Potter books and films. This doesn't impact Hogwarts Legacy, but within the game, Slytherin still has its detractors.

The legacy left by notable alumni such as Severus Snape and Voldemort is still a major part of Harry Potter lore and inevitable in the game. Voldemort's ancestor Omnis Gaunt makes a point of this when players interact with him. Although he is a pleasant individual, he proves that Slytherin still has a bad reputation.
