Adapting a successful book series into movies is no easy task, especially when it's the Harry Potter saga. Harry Potter is full of rich worldbuilding, magical creatures, and detailed storytelling. J.K Rowling's seven fantasy novels are also home to over seven hundred wonderful characters, each with its own excited fans who wanted to see them on screen.

Winky from Harry Potter

Goblet Of Fire opens with Harry, Hermione, and the Weasleys attending the 1994 Quidditch World Cup, a highly anticipated event where either Ireland or Bulgaria will crown themselves as champions. While waiting for the match to start, Harry and his friends meet Winky, a female house-elf who works for an important Ministry official named Barty Crouch.

9 Cho's Friend Marietta Edgecombe Betrayed Dumbledore's Army

Harry and Cho

Aside from introducing the titular evil-fighting organization, Order Of The Phoenix also sees the creation of Dumbledore's Army. Students from every house but Slytherin joined, including Harry's crush Cho Chang and her best friend, Marietta Edgecombe.

Unlike Cho, Marietta had joined quite reluctantly. Marietta's mother worked for the Ministry of Magic and she feared her actions would affect her mom. When she eventually betrays Dumbledore's Army to Umbridge, Hermione's traitor jinx manifests as a pimple breakout that spells 'sneak' across her face, effectively identifying Marietta as the informer.

Frank and Alice Longbottom in a magical photograph of the original Order of the Phoenix

In 1981, at the height of Voldemort's power, Neville Longbottom's parents were tortured into insanity by a group of Death Eaters that included Bellatrix Lestrange and her husband. The Longbottoms had been influential members of the Order of the Phoenix at the time, and their son was one of two possible 'Chosen Ones' who could bring Voldemort down.

When Harry, Hermione, and the Weasleys visit St. Mungo's in Order Of The Phoenix, they see the Longbottoms being treated for 'irrevocable spell damage' in the same ward as their old professor, Gilderoy Lockhart. Given their condition, they're unable to recognize their son, who visits them whenever he's not at Hogwarts.

Peeves from the Harry Potter books

Hogwarts is filled with hundreds of different ghosts and spirits. The most interesting is Peeves, Hogwarts' resident poltergeist. As a mischievous spirit, Peeves enjoys playing pranks on the caretaker, calling the students offensive names, and generally wreaking havoc at every opportunity.

After Harry's first start-of-term feast in Philosopher's Stone, Peeves floats by the new Gryffindor first-years and taunts Ron's pompous older brother, Percy. After continuing to cause trouble during Harry's time at school, Peeves joins the fight against Voldemort in Deathly Hallows and remains at the castle thereafter.

5 Tonks' Parents Helped The Order Transport Harry To Safety

Harry Potter Black Sisters

After meeting Tonks in Order Of The Phoenix, Harry learns that her mother, Andromeda, is Sirius' cousin and Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy's middle sister. When she married Ted Tonks, a Muggle-born wizard, she was shunned by the Black family and removed from the tapestry in Grimmauld Place.

The Tonks family plays an integral role in Deathly Hallows. They lend their residence as a 'safe house' for the Order of the Phoenix during Harry's transportation from Privet Drive to the Burrow. Shortly after, Ted goes on the run to avoid the Ministry but is eventually murdered by Snatchers. At the end of the story, Andromeda takes care of her newborn grandson, Teddy Lupin.

4 Professor Binns Teaches Hogwarts' Worst Subject

Harry Potter Professor Binns

Despite the abundance of ghosts 'living' within the castle, Hogwarts only boasts one undead teacher, Cuthbert Binns. First appearing in Philosopher's Stone, Professor Binns teaches the History of Magic. The History Of Magic is considered by many Hogwarts pupils to be the most boring subject at the school.

After working at Hogwarts for many years, Binns passed away in his sleep while relaxing in front of a fireplace. With his next class approaching, Binns simply 'woke up' as a ghost and floated through the blackboard into his classroom. He's known for his boring, reedy voice, which leads most of his students to fall asleep during his lectures.

The Weasley's on their trip to Egypt

Described as an outdoorsy type with a talent for Quidditch and a love for magical creatures, Charlie works in a dragon sanctuary in Romania. In Philosopher's Stone, he receives Hagrid's dragon Norbert at his workplace. In Goblet Of Fire, he attends the Quidditch World Cup with his family and provides four dragons to the Triwizard Tournament at Hogwarts.

2 Teddy Lupin Is A Fan-Favorite Who Was Cut From The Movies

Luke Newberry

One of the most popular characters of the next generation, Teddy Lupin is the only child of Harry's friends, Remus and Dora Lupin. While the Golden Trio are hiding at Bill and Fleur's cottage in Deathly Hallows, Lupin announces the birth of his son. His son is a metamorphmagus like his mother and Lupin enthusiastically asks Harry to be Teddy's godfather. After Teddy's parents' deaths, Teddy's grandmother takes him in and cares for him with Harry's help.

The Potter children (James, Albus, and Lily) all seem to consider Teddy an older brother in the epilogue. Unlike other book-only characters, Teddy was meant to appear in the eighth and last film but his scene was ultimately scrapped. English actor Luke Newberry was cast in the role.

After her abusive relatives are sent to Azkaban, Merope manages to allure a handsome Muggle named Tom Riddle with a love potion, marries him, and then bears his child.

As the proud descendants of Salazar Slytherin, the Gaunts possessed two powerful objects, the Gaunt Ring and Slytherin's locket, that would later become Voldemort's Horcruxes.
