Adapting a book series into a movie franchise is no easy feat, but the Harry Potter series is a prime example of how to do it well. While the eight-film saga managed to capture the magic and wonder of the Wizarding World, many fans have complained that some of their favorite - or least favorite - characters weren't done justice.
From petty and annoying Slytherin mean girls to cranky house-elves and lively witches bursting with personality, there's no denying that these characters' movie counterparts deserved far better.
10 Pansy Parkinson Was A Mean Girl Who Always Tried Bringing Hermione Down
Described as the 'anti-Hermione,' Pansy Parkinson was the only girl in Draco Malfoy's gang of Slytherins. She barely had any screen time in the movies, mostly appearing as a background character with minimal lines. In the books, she was often bullying and antagonizing Hermione.
Sometime after accompanying Draco to the Yule Ball as his date, Pansy became his girlfriend. The two were also selected as Slytherin's prefects during their fifth year, and frequently abused their power to torment students from other houses. During the Battle of Hogwarts, she suggested giving Harry up to Voldemort, which got her and the rest of Slytherin sent to the dungeons.
9 Firenze Later Became Hogwarts' Divination Professor Alongside Trelawney
Firenze first appeared in Philosopher's Stone as one of the less aggressive centaurs living in the Forbidden Forest. Aware that there was something dangerous lurking in the forest, he helped a lost Harry reunite with Hagrid even though his actions would get him in trouble with the rest of his herd.
When Umbridge fired Trelawney in Order Of The Phoenix, Firenz had been kicked out by the other centaurs for sympathizing with Dumbledore and became Hogwarts' new Divination professor. His classroom was transfigured to resemble the forest, complete with trees, bushes, and a starry night sky. Upon Trelawney's return, the two began sharing the course.
8 Angelina Johnson Was A Determined And Strong Witch With Multiple Talents
One of the best Quidditch players in Gryffindor, Angelina was Harry's teammate for five years before graduating in 1996. Her drive and excellent Quidditch skills led her to become Captain during her last year at Hogwarts where she had the difficult task of guiding her team despite Umbridge's constant interference.
When the Triwizard Tournament was announced, Angelina applied by putting her name into the Goblet of Fire and received all of Gryffindor's support in the process. She was also a member of Dumbledore's Army and returned to Hogwarts to help bring down Voldemort in Deathly Hallows. She eventually married George and had two children, Fred and Roxanne.
7 Dudley Eventually Realized The Damage His Family Had Inflicted On Harry
Unlike Harry, Dudley was a spoiled, self-centered child who would often bully those he considered weaker than himself. While the movies did an accurate job of portraying the worst of his character, they failed to show his growth, especially as it's described in the last couple of books.
After Harry saved him from the Dementors, Dudley seemed to have a change of heart with regard to his cousin. He stopped picking on him, both physically and verbally, and even attempted to apologize with a cup of tea that Harry mistook for a booby trap. In the future, the two became friendly enough that they'd exchange Christmas cards every year.
6 Kreacher Finally Changed For The Better After Being Treated With Kindness
Despite his devotion to the House of Black, Kreacher's hatred for Sirius led him to seek out masters who he thought far more worthy. While serving Bellatrix and Narcissa, he even provided them with information that would prove crucial in fooling Harry and leading him to the Ministry of Magic.
With Sirius' death, Kreacher passed to be in Harry's service, but it wasn't until Deathly Hallows that Kreacher finally accepted him as his new master. After Harry gifted him Regulus Black's fake Slytherin's Locket, Kreacher changed for the better and even took care of the Golden Trio while they hid at Grimmauld Place.
5 Bill Was The Most Accomplished Of The Weasley Siblings
A highly gifted Curse-Breaker, Bill first met Harry when he returned from working abroad just in time for the Quidditch World Cup. He was easily the most academically accomplished of the Weasley siblings, being a prefect and Head Boy during his Hogwarts years and later obtaining a job at the Wizarding bank, Gringotts.
After choosing to remain in Britain to join the Order of the Phoenix, Bill met Fleur and the two began dating despite his family's protests. An encounter with the werewolf Fenrir Greyback in Half-Blood Prince would leave him terribly scarred only months before his wedding, but he would continue doing his part in the war until the very end.
4 Fleur Proved That She Was As Tenacious As She Was Beautiful
In 1994, Fleur represented Beauxbatons Academy in the Triwizard Tournament, proving that she was one of her school's most exemplary students. While interning at Gringotts to improve her English, she began a relationship with Bill Weasley and the two were engaged soon after.
As a quarter-Veela, Fleur was as beautiful as she was temperamental. After antagonizing half of the Weasley family for an entire summer, she finally gained their respect when she supported Bill after Fenrir Greyback's attack. From then on, Fleur was an active participant in the war, doing her best to help the Order of the Phoenix.
3 Percy Managed To Redeem Himself After Disowning His Family
One of the most disliked characters in the series, Percy was known for his ambition, his pompous attitude, and his hatred of any rule-breaking or lighthearted occasion. After securing a job under Barty Crouch at the Ministry of Magic, Percy became even more insufferable and later turned against his family when they supported Harry's claims that Voldemort had returned.
Convinced that associating with Harry would further ruin his family, he tried to convince Ron to end their friendship, but to no avail. Despite learning of Voldemort's return, Percy continued to avoid his family for two years, only redeeming himself during the Battle of Hogwarts.
2 Tonks Was One Of The Strongest Witches In Harry Potter
A fan favorite, Tonks was one of the strongest and most skilled witches in Harry Potter, frequently using her rare, innate Metamorphmagus powers and top-notch Auror training to help the Order in the constant fight against Voldemort. As one of the youngest members in the Order, she quickly bonded with Harry, Hermione, and the teenage Weasleys, who considered her a kooky yet reliable ally.
During most of Half-Blood Prince, Tonks pined for Lupin, who thought himself less than adequate to reciprocate her feelings. After publicly declaring his love for him, the two began a relationship, married soon after, and had a son called Teddy before their deaths in the Battle of Hogwarts.
1 Ginny Was A Lively Person Who Never Hesitated To Speak Her Mind
Ginny is the character that suffered the most when she was translated from the pages to the big screen. Often described as fiery, Ginny was an independent person who never failed to speak her mind and hold others accountable, even if they were her own friends.
She was a strong witch and a talented Quidditch player, which made her stand out beyond her own house. Though she was initially shy around Harry, she slowly began showing her true self and gained his friendship and love. While the Golden Trio were hunting Horcruxes, Ginny, Neville, and Luna took over Dumbledore's Army and led a successful teenage rebellion from inside Hogwarts.
