Who Will Appear in the Thunderbolts Film?

Marvel confirmed Thunderbolts during its San Diego Comic-Con 2022 presentation, revealing the film would close out Phase 5. Similar to DC's better-known Suicide Squad, the Thunderbolts are comprised of anti-heroes and villains from Marvel's movies, working together as a more chaotic Avengers-like team to fight evil -- for the most part. Confirmed members of the team include Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), reportedly as the leader, Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), John Walker/U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus).

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige teased the dynamics of the group, claiming that the former brainwashed Russian assassin Winter Soldier, Barnes, is the "most stable" of the bunch. Some fans noted that the inclusion of Red Guardian, Yelena and Taskmaster seems to indicate this film might be something of a Black Widow sequel. Others questioned whether fan-favorite Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl), a usual member of the group, might appear in the movie.

Fans speculated that a Thunderbolts film might be in the works after the introduction of Julia Louis-Dreyfus' Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine in Falcon and the Winter Soldier. At the end of the series, Fontaine invites Walker to join a new team she's putting together and bestows him with the title U.S. Agent. This, coupled with her brief appearance recruiting Yelena in an end-credits scene for Black Widow, convinced many fans of a Thunderbolts-esque project in the works.

It remains unclear whether any previously established heroes might appear in the film. Anthony Mackie initially denied that he might appear in the movie but has since left the door open. "I have no idea," the new Captain America recently said. "You know how it works. [Marvel Studios calls] you the week before and are like, 'We own your ass. Come get in the movie.'"

Thunderbolts arrives in theaters on July 26, 2024.
