Harley Quinn writer/producer Patrick Schumacker confirmed the animated series' cast members have begun recording their lines for Season 3.

"Today we started recording [Harley Quinn Season 3]," Schumacker wrote on Twitter. "[Diedrich Bader] was back as Batman! Jim Rash was back as Riddler! and [Chris Meloni] was back as Commissioner Gordon! We’re back!!!" He went on to thank HBO Max for ordering Season 3, saying "They have been phenomenal partners on this."

Developed by Schumacker, Justin Halpern and Dean Lorey, the animated Harley Quinn series follows the titular character as she and her close friend Poison Ivy form a super-villain crew of their own after Harley leaves the Joker. The show premiered its first two seasons on DC Universe and earned critical acclaim for its unique blend of comical ultra-violence, adult humor and nuanced character development. With DC Universe being restructured as the premium comic book subscription service DC Universe Infinite, Harley Quinn will move exclusively to HBO Max for Season 3.

In a reply to one of his Twitter followers, Schumacker revealed that Ron Funches will begin recording his lines as King Shark for Harley Quinn Season 3 next week. Schumacker also confirmed that Season 3 was originally going to explore Ivy's origins "but as we started writing it shifted away from the origins part." In spite of this, Season 3 will still be "a HUGE Ivy season."

Recently, Harley Quinn was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series at the 32nd annual GLAAD Media Awards for its portrayal of Harley and Ivy's relationship, which evolved from a friendship into a romance over the course of the first two seasons. According to Halpern, Season 3 will focus on the pair's efforts to maintain a healthy connection after years of toxic relationships. "So this is the first time they're both going to be in a relationship where they really and truly have affection towards one another," Halpern noted. "They have a lot of responsibility. So I think like, 'what is it like to be in a good relationship after you've only ever been in bad relationships with abusive people?' is a big theme we want to play with."

Harley Quinn stars Kaley Cuoco, Lake Bell, Diedrich Bader, Alan Tudyk, Rahul Kohli, Christopher Meloni, Tony Hale, Ron Funches, Wanda Sykes, Natalie Morales, Jim Rash, Giancarlo Esposito, Jason Alexander and J.B. Smoove. Seasons 1 and 2 of the series are available to stream on HBO Max.
