Suicide Squad director James Gunn confirmed Harley Quinn, presumably the version played by Margot Robbie, will return to the DC Extended Universe in the future.

On Twitter, Gunn tweeted out a tribute to Quinn on Sept. 11, the character's 30th anniversary. After thanking her creators, Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, Gunn said that he finds it "an absolute joy to write, direct and create stories for" her. In a reply, Gunn was asked if Quinn would return to the DCEU, and he responded, "Yes."

What's Going on With Harley Quinn and the DCEU?

The DCEU kicked off in 2013 with Man of Steel that film was followed by 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and then Suicide Squad later that same year. It was in Suicide Squad that Robbie made her debut as Quinn. However, following the theatrical failure of 2017's Justice League, the DCEU has been undergoing major restructurings. While Quinn has appeared in two movies since then -- 2020's Birds of Prey and 2021's The Suicide Squad -- it's unclear when she'll next return. Things have gotten even more uncertain following the cancelation of the nearly-completed Batgirl film and Warner Bros. desire to build a new road map for the franchise. Still, Gunn's answer is incredibly clear.

Gunn, who is also known for his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directed The Suicide Squad, which was a soft reboot of the team. He also helmed a spinoff series, Peacemaker, for HBO Max. That show focused on John Cena's titular character.

Quinn first appeared in a 1992 episode of Batman: The Animated Series titles "Joker's Favor" and was originally the Clown Prince of Crime's love interest and sidekick. Quinn proved immensely popular and has since made her way to other DC media. Most iterations of the character have split from Joker, and some have struck up romantic relationships with Poison Ivy. Currently, there's an animated HBO Max series, titled Harley Quinn, that documents the character's adventures and work in the Gotham City underworld. Outside the DCEU, Lady Gaga is set to play Quinn in Joker: Folie a Deux, the sequel to 2019's Joker.

The Suicide Squad is available to stream now on HBO Max alongside the DCEU's other films.
