WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Harley Quinn #8, on sale now from DC Comics.

Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy have become one of DC's most high-profile LGBT relationships, with their romance now being openly referenced in various stories with a frankness that formerly wasn't afforded to them. Not only have they quietly been together for some time in the current continuity, it turns out they've been embracing that romance in private in some surprising ways.

In Harley Quinn #8 (by Stephanie Phillips, Riley Rossmo, Ivan Plascencia, and Deron Bennett), a flashback to a previous night in the relationship between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy reveals which two classic heroes they cosplayed as in the bedroom -- and it's wild.

Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy -- who spent years teased as a potential romantic pair -- have been fully and openly embraced in recent years as a couple. This has also extended to revelations about how their relationship worked in the past, confirming that they were previously intimate. This is one of the major reasons why Harley has become involved in the events of "Fear State." While the Bat-Family and most of Gotham are specifically contending with the Magistrate's forces and the manipulations of the Scarecrow, Harley has been focused on restoring Poison Ivy to her full form by reuniting her two halves -- the ruthless Queen Ivy, and the more carefree and innocent Ivy.

After finding Ivy in Alleytown under the protection of Catwoman, Harley and the rest of the group are confronted by Keepsake, a new villain who has targeted the anti-hero as part of his plan to become a new fixture in Gotham City. While trying to explain who he is to her allies, Harley starts an extended flashback sequence that quickly delves into her life. While she's initially entranced by a memory of her and Ivy sharing a deep kiss, the next flashback is a slightly more private one: Harley tries to force the story to move on, past a picture of her and Ivy dressed as Green Arrow and Speedy respectively. Both of them wear domino masks to help complete the costumes, with Harley even wearing a fake goatee.

There's a drink on a nearby dresser while the two lie in bed, smiling at one another. The implication is that the pair decided to bring a little bit of roleplay to the bedroom -- and specifically chose to recreate a classic DC hero and his (formerly) teenage sidekick for their time together. It's a wild revelation, and it's something even the typically open and frank Harley doesn't want the rest of the group to know about. It's a sweet element of their relationship confirmed, making the long-running subtext of their time together much more literal. But it's also a surprisingly risque suggestion to slip into the story, hinting that the pair have a preference for the kind of games in the bedroom that might not fly in other DC titles.

It's also surprising that the two chose to take on the masked identities of Green Arrow and Speedy during their time together. By taking on the costumes of a confirmed hero and sidekick, it adds a layer of racy reference to their time together. There have been plenty of off-color remarks over the years about older heroes and their younger wards (the most famous being the relationship between Batman and Robin), and now it seems that element is being referenced in-universe with a similar pairing being at the heart of a night Harley and Ivy spent together. It's a surprisingly bawdy moment for the issue, and one that still feels perfectly in-tune with the chaotic and self-referential aspects of the modern day version of Harley Quinn.
