Filmmaker James Gunn has landed the perfect role in the third season of HBO Max's DC Universe animated series Harley Quinn.

In an interview with Slash Film, Harley Quinn co-creator Patrick Schumacker revealed who Gunn -- director of 2021's The Suicide Squad and showrunner on its spinoff Peacemaker -- will play in the show's upcoming third season. "He is playing himself, and is directing a movie about [Batman's father] Thomas Wayne," said Schumacker. While Gunn is primarily known as a writer and director, he also has several acting credits to his name.

Schumacker recently announced on Twitter that Harley Quinn Season 3 had finished its first audio mix, confirming that the next batch of episodes was edging closer to completion. This news followed the producer's announcement in February 2021 which revealed that the Harley Quinn cast had begun recording sessions for the critically acclaimed animated series' third season. Stars Diedrich Bader (Batman), Jim Rash (The Riddler) and Chris Meloni (Commissioner Gordon) were the first voice actors to return.

The Harley Quinn co-creator isn't alone in hyping the show's third season. The 2021 DC FanDome virtual event showcased unfinished animation from Harley Quinn Season 3, which picks up after the events of the Season 2 finale "Something Borrowed, Something Green." The climactic episode saw Poison Ivy break off her engagement with fellow supervillain Kite Man and finally express her true feelings for her partner-in-crime Harley, setting the stage for the forthcoming season.

Ron Funches, who voices Nanaue/King Shark, teased more romance between Harley and Ivy in Season 3, in a December 2021 interview. "I think people really fell in love with [the Harley/Ivy relationship] and the fact of them getting together near the end of the season is a beautiful thing and just watching them grow together as a relationship, I think, is what you're going to see a lot in the next season," enthused Funches.

Schumacker also recently divulged that Harley Quinn spinoff focused on Kite Man is in the works. "He tries to run the bar by himself but it doesn't turn out so easy," said Schumacker, of the new show's premise. "We have Harley and Ivy appear in the first episode, but after that we have with different goons and villains appearing every episode like Lex Luthor and Bane. It will be kind of like Cheers for supervillains."

Harley Quinn Season 3 will premiere on HBO Max in 2022. It does not yet have an official release date.
