Check your calendars and get out your credit cards! This is a rare opportunity to hear one of the masters of the short story in one of his legendary speaking engagements, and remember, it's all for a good cause!

HARLAN ELLISON was recently characterized by The New York Times Book Review as having "the spellbinding quality of a great nonstop talker, with a cultural warehouse for a mind." The Los Angeles Times suggested, "It's long past time for Harlan Ellison to be awarded the title: 20th century Lewis Carroll." And the Washington Post Book World said simply, "One of the great living American short story writers."

He has written or edited 75 books; more than 1700 stories, essays, articles, and newspaper columns; two dozen teleplays, for which he received the Writers Guild of America most outstanding teleplay award for solo work an unprecedented four times; and a dozen movies. He won the Mystery Writers of America Edgar Allan Poe award twice, the Horror Writers Association Bram Stoker award six times (including The Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996), the Nebula three times, the Hugo 8½ times, and received the Silver Pen for Journalism from P.E.N. Not to mention The World Fantasy Award, the British Fantasy Award, the American Mystery Award, two Audie Awards, the Ray Bradbury Award, and a Grammy nomination for Spoken Word recordings.

All of us at Earth-2 Comics are big believers in the power of reading to shape kids' lives. We're each and every one of us enjoying the lives we have today in no small part thanks to our childhood love of comic books, which inspired us, taught us, and pointed us in the right direction. Now, we're trying to repay that debt, by doing all we can to insure that underprivileged kids have that same opportunity to let reading change their lives for the better.

As referenced above, our Evening with Harlan Ellison is our first major fundraiser for the Penny Lane Youth Foundation Library Project. We're raising money to build a library/reading room for Penny Lane, a non-profit organization dedicated to saving and educating orphans, at-risk youth and troubled teens. Founded by Ivelise Markovits in 1969 and headquartered in North Hills, California, Penny Lane provides therapeutic residential services and education for teenagers, foster family home placements for boys and girls and transitional housing for young adults who would otherwise be homeless. The Library Project was initiated last year when Earth-2 made a donation of books and T-shirts to the center but discovered there was not a dedicated reading room on the premises. For more information about Penny Lane and how you can help, go to www.pennylane.org.

We've also been actively supporting the Beyond 4 Walls Book Drive, in cooperation with the Nidorf Collective, a group of students from the UCLA Information Studies graduate program which has been working to bring books to the over 600 children and teens currently housed at the Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Detention Facility in Sylmar, California. If you'd like to help donate books to this much under-served population of youths, just e-mail us at Earth2@earth2comics.com and we'll let you know what books they're in need of and how you can help provide them. Spidey's Uncle Ben said it best: with great power comes great responsibility. We've all got the power in our hands to make a difference, every one of us. All it takes is the decision to help.
