The Final Fantasy series is known for its epic battles against towering behemoths and omnipotent gods. Many of these eldritch abominations and mysterious beings act as late-game bosses, if not the final boss. However, even they aren't as challenging as the game can get.

Should the player feel up to the challenge, almost every FF game features at least one extremely tough super boss that outclasses even the big bad. Here are some of the biggest challenges a Final Fantasy fan will ever face, should they have packed enough Phoenix Downs.

Yiazmat, Final Fantasy XII

Final Fantasy XII's boss Yiazmat appears

The resident super boss of Final Fantasy XII, this monster is found in the Colosseum in the Ridorana Cataract. Simply getting to it is a chore due to the arena being surrounded by several traps. Yiazmat is dangerous enough in that it uses large area-of-effect attacks to damage the party, and almost all of its attacks carry a chance to cause instant death. But the worst aspect about fighting Yiazmat is its absolutely gigantic health pool--featuring a whopping 50 million HP; even high-level players will take at least an hour to defeat the beast.

Omega Weapon, Final Fantasy VIII

The Ultima Weapon is a recurring super boss in the series, often rewarding the player with a sword also dubbed Ultima Weapon. However, its more powerful counterpart in Final Fantasy VIII has no such reward beyond the bragging rights of having beaten it. The Omega Weapon can absorb all elemental magic and has well over a million HP, not to mention having a wide variety of incredibly damaging attacks like Ultima and Meteor, making it one of the toughest bosses in the series.

Penance, Final Fantasy X

The super boss of Final Fantasy X, Penance, boasts many attributes that previous super bosses had, such as elemental absorption, highly damaging attacks, and of course, a massive fountain of HP to bleed through. In addition to these, Penance can slow the party down to a crawl, significantly drain a character's MP, and has an impeccably strong defense that must be bypassed with Celestial Weapons. Its ultimate attack is Judgement Day--a fitting name, as it deals 99,999 HP and 999 MP's worth of damage, making auto-revive spells and potions essential solely to survive.

Ozma, Final Fantasy IX

Ozma from Final Fantasy IX

Simultaneously the most simple-looking and most alien in perhaps the entire Final Fantasy rogues' gallery of super bosses, Ozma from FFIX will intimidate players with sheer size alone. Then they'll be utterly baffled as not only are physical attacks useless due to Ozma being out of reach, but the entity will frequently heal itself while nearly destroying the party with typical super boss potency. However, what makes Ozma unique is its unique script that allows it to have its active time battle fill instantly at the moment it's attacked--meaning that even landing a single hit on the thing will immediately be followed by a horrible counterattack.

Ruby Weapon, Final Fantasy VII

Perhaps the super boss that served as a harsh introduction to the concept for many players, the Ruby Weapon of the mind-numbingly popular Final Fantasy VII is the most infamous boss in not only Final Fantasy but among many JRPGs. It's hard enough to find, let alone fight, as it only appears as a random battle after defeating the game's Ultima Weapon and only on a Chocobo or in the Highwind. When it does show up, it always begins in a back attack and absolutely cannot be damaged whatsoever until there is only one party member left alive and it shows its tentacles.

Beyond the typical traits every super boss in the series possesses, the Ruby Weapon surpasses most of them due to the arduous conditions required even to dent the beast. Most players will be utterly grateful that super bosses like the Ruby Weapon are completely optional. Only the truly battle-hardened would dare take any of these bosses on, and only with proper preparation.
